Philippines loses Php 220 Billion per year due to malnutrition

“29,000 under-five children die every year due to undernutrition” stated Mr. Joris Van Hees, Nutrition Specialist of UNICEF, during the launch of the Costing Study on Undernutrition in the Philippines and Philippines launch of the 2017 Global Nutrition Report at the House of Representatives, Quezon City held last 23 January 2018.
The country loses Php 220 billion per year or about 1.5% of GDP due to malnutrition. This was the conclusion of the UNICEF-commissioned “Costing Study on Undernutrition”. The study noted “Stunting alone contributes to more than 50% of the economic costs of undernutrition”.
The highlights of the costing study was presented in a forum held on 23 January 2018. Participating in the forum were selected legislators from House of Representatives, House Committee on Appropriations, Ways and Means, and the House Leadership, representatives from national government agencies (DA, DBM, DepEd, DILG, DOH, DOLE, DSWD, DTI, NEDA, OCS and NNC), non government organizations (Modern Nanays of Mindanao, PhilCAN, PCW), and UN agencies (FAO, UNICEF, WFP, WHO, World Bank).

NNC’s Radyo Mo sa Nutrisyon bags Gandingan Awards

The National Nutrition Council's Radyo Mo sa Nutrisyon did it again as it received its 3rd trophy as the Most Development-Oriented Public Service Program (General Award for national or nationwide category) at the 12th Gandingan UPLB Isko't Iska Multi-Media Awards. Its hosts, NNC'S Executive Director IV Assistant Secretary of Health Maria-Bernardita T. Flores, for the third time, and DZXL veteran broadcaster Rod Marcelino were also recognized as Best AM Program Hosts (General Award) during the awarding ceremony held on 17 March 2018 at University of the Philippines Los Baños in Laguna.

NNC welcomes new members of the 2018 National Evaluation Team

The National Nutrition Council’s (NNC) Nutrition Surveillance Division conducted an orientation and hands-on workshop for new members of the National Evaluation Team (NET) for the Search for the 2017 National Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar (NOBNS), Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner on Nutrition (CROWN) Maintenance Awardees and Nutrition Honor Awardees (NHA). The participants consist of representatives from the Department of Health-Family Health Office, Department of Trade and Industry, Department of Interior and Local Government, Department of Agriculture, University of the Philippines-Los Baños, Philippine Society of Nutritionist-Dietitians, Philippine Association of Nutrition and representatives from NNC’s Nutrition Information and Education Division, Office of the Executive Director, Financial and Management Division and Administrative Division.

NNC holds Assembly of the National Nutrition Evaluation Team

The National Nutrition Council (NNC) on 22 February 2018 held a general assembly of the National Evaluation Team (NET) at the NNC Boardroom to jumpstart the annual conduct of the Monitoring of Local Level Plan Implementation or MELLPI. Assistant Secretary of Health and NNC Executive Director Bernie Flores presided over the assembly composed of new and experienced members of the NET. An overview of the programs and projects of the local government units vying for the various award categories were discussed to prepare the teams during the visits. The 21 local government units to be visited this 2018 are vying for the Nutrition Honor Award, the First Year and Second Year Consistent Regional Award on Nutrition (CROWN) Maintenance Award. The team composition for each area to be visited was also discussed during the assembly.
