The City of Mandaluyong is one of the five (5) local government units vying for the 2015 Nutrition Honor Award (NHA) in the country. The Nutrition Honor Award (NHA) is the highest award given by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) to a local government unit in recognition of its outstanding planning, management and implementation of their local nutrition programs anchored on the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) marked by efficiency and effectiveness.
The inter-agency Nutrition Evaluation Team (NET) headed by NNC Executive Director and Assistant Secretary of Health Maria-Bernardita T. Flores with members Ms. Jomarie L. Tongol of NNC, Ms. Azucena Banga of San Pablo Apostol Parish and Dr. Celna Tejare of ACF International evaluated the city’s nutrition program on June 14-17, 2016. Also present to give moral support to the City Nutrition Committee (CNC) were NNC-NCR Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Milagros Elisa V. Federizo and Nutrition Officer III Emerenciana L. Francia.
Outgoing City Mayor and CNC Chair Benhur C. Abalos together with incoming Mayor-elect and former City Nutrition Action Officer (CNAO) Carmelita “Menchie” Abalos led the members of the CNC, Barangay Captains, Barangay NAOs and Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) in welcoming the members of the NET. During the 4-day evaluation, the NET conducted desk review, interview with the members of the CNC and BNCs of the randomly chosen barangays and validation weighing of children 0-71 months old. The four (4) barangays visited by the NET for barangay validation were Barangays Malamig, Daang Bakal, San Jose and Barangka Drive.
The NET had an exit conference with the CNC, BNC Chairs, BNAOs and BNSs at the end of the 4-day national evaluation. The members of the NET presented their findings and recommendations on how the city can improve further their nutrition programs to address their city’s nutrition problems and their causes.
Incoming Mayor-elect Menchie Abalos said that it has been a long and fulfilling journey for Mandaluyong City, from being a low-performing city in nutrition program management to a city vying for the highest nutrition award in the land. She attributes their accomplishments to the leadership of the Mayor and Barangay Captains as chairpersons of the local nutrition committees (LNCs), the unity and cooperation of the members of the LNCs and the commitment, dedication and hard work of the Barangay Nutrition Scholars.
