egg promotion in NCRAn egg a day is okay!

Eating an egg a day is alright for healthy individuals. As long as an individual observe his or her overall saturated fat intake, he can eat at least one egg everyday.

Egg is nutritious, it has protein, minerals, vitamins and unsaturated fats. Egg is an important component of the Filipino diet and it can be prepared in various ways providing pleasant and highly acceptable meals and snacks. Eggs are convenient and easy to prepare too. They require short cooking period and can be used in many types of dishes.

However, despite its nutritional quality and affordability, consumption of egg is still low because of many misconceptions. One common misconception is that egg can raise blood cholesterol thus increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Based on studies, eating an egg a day has no detectable effect on heart disease in healthy people. The effect of dietary cholesterol on blood cholesterol is too small to produce an effect on heart disease. It is the intake of foods high in saturated fats like butter, chicken skin, pork fat, beef tallow, and lard from animal that increases the amount of bad cholesterol in the blood and not the intake of dietary cholesterol like egg.

In an effort to promote the egg consumption in Metro Manila, the Regional Nutrition Committee approved the RNC Resolution No.5, s2018 entitled “Resolution Enjoining Regional Nutrition Committee Member Agencies and Local Government Units to Promote Egg Consumption”. The resolution which was approved during the Joint Meeting of the Regional Nutrition Committee and Regional Nutrition Management Group held on November 2018, encourages its members and LGUs to promote egg as cheapest source of protein, vitamins and minerals and include egg in their dietary supplementation programs.

The RNC hopes that with this resolution, egg consumption will increase in Metro Manila and help the egg farmers while contributing to the improvement of nutritional status of Filipino people. (ELF/NPC MEVF/NNC-NCR)
