The members of the Regional Nutrition Management Group (RNMG) of NCR and selected nutrition action officers, nutritionist-dietitians and barangay nutrition scholars met on November 28, 2019 for a program implementation review (PIR) to assess the first-year implementation of the Regional Plan of Action for Nutrition (RPAN) 2019-2022 of the National Capital Region. The PIR aims to determine the progress of the RPAN implementation and the necessary adjustments needed to meet the targets and objectives by 2022.
The RPAN is the response of the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) to the nutrition challenges in the region. The local government units (LGUs), being key implementers, are mandated to deliver nutrition and nutrition-related services and are expected to translate the PPAN into local nutrition action plans to be able to implement nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive programs in the communities.
In a plenary session, actual accomplishments of RNC member agencies versus the RPAN results framework were presented and discussed. Members of the RNMG gave additional inputs on the accomplishments and these were validated by the LGU participants. An important part of the review was the analysis of accomplishments and identifying the reasons for any variations from the targets. Measures to correct deviations and gaps were also identified by the participants.
A workshop was also held wherein LGU participants brainstormed on how the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) can better assist them in moving forward the PPAN at the local level to prevent stunting and other forms of malnutrition. The RNMG members, on the other hand, discussed the strategies to address gaps in the implementation of the RPAN and identify adjustments needed in the programs/projects and targets for 2020.
The results of the PIR will guide the RNC in its implementation of the RPAN in the next three (3) years. The RNC is optimistic that through collaborative effort and convergent actions of various stakeholders at the regional and local levels, the PPAN’s outcome targets of reducing wasting, stunting and micronutrient deficiencies, and improving the situation of overweight and obesity will be achieved.
