The eyes maybe the window to one’s soul but they say that the mouth is the window to one’s over-all health. A healthy person will have healthy teeth and gums. On the other hand, an unhealthy lifestyle may contribute to various oral health diseases such as dental caries and periodontal or gum diseases. These are two (2) of the most common oral health diseases in the country.
Dental caries or tooth decay occur when bacteria in the mouth converts the sugar from our food into acid that destroys the teeth’s surface called enamel. People with periodontal disease may experience pain, have bad breath, and bleeding or swollen gums. Tooth decay and gum diseases may not be the direct cause of disability or death. However, it can lead to unproductiveness that may greatly affect the quality of life for both children and adults.
Improve eating habits
Aside from poor oral hygiene, unhealthy diet, smoking and harmful use of alcohol are some of the risk factors that can be addressed to prevent oral health diseases. Improving your eating habits is a step you can take to promote or maintain good oral health.
Eat less of sugary food and beverages such as candies, chocolates, candies, and soft drinks or carbonated drinks. When the bacteria in the mouth digest sugar, they release acid as waste product that damages the teeth causing dental caries and gum diseases.
Stop smoking and limit your alcohol intake to reduce your risk of oral cancer, tooth decay, tooth loss and gum diseases. Also, limit intake of coffee and tea for it causes stain and yellowing of the teeth. Eat healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables and calcium-rich food and drink for strong teeth and gums. Drink at least eight (8) glasses of water every day to prevent dehydration.
Practice good oral hygiene
Promote the practice of self-care for oral health. Brush your teeth properly at least twice a day during morning and evening and even after meals using toothpaste with at least 1000ppm fluoride content. Brush your teeth at least two (2) minutes and make it habit of not rinsing your mouth with water after brushing to preserve the fluoride. Visit the dentist every six (6) months for early detection and preventive case.
The Department of Health (DOH) through the local government units (LGUs) offers basic package of essential oral health services and care for all age groups from pregnant women and infants up to the elderly. These services include oral examination, oral prophylaxis, permanent fillings, and gum treatment, among others. These can be availed in the health centers and/or school for school children.
Good oral health will promote over-all health and nutrition. Eat a balanced diet, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and practice good oral hygiene to have good oral health.
