Hypertension, commonly known as high blood pressure, is a significant medical condition in which the blood pressure rises over normal (>140/90mmHg). It is also known as the "silent killer" since it has no symptoms most of the time. Hence, some people die from the disease without being diagnosed. According to the Department of Health (DOH), hypertension is the primary cause of illness and is one of the known triggering factors of premature death in the Philippines.
As per Proclamation No. 1761, s. 2009, the month of May is designated as “Hypertension Awareness Month”. The celebration aims to prevent and control the country's increasing risk of hypertension and cardiovascular complications.
There are several methods to manage hypertension. The DOH recommends the regular monitoring of blood pressure levels. Writing it down in a journal could also serve as your record to show to your primary care provider or doctor during check-up.
Diffuse the hypertension threat by eating a healthy and balanced diet that includes whole grains, fish, poultry, fruits, and vegetables. Limit consumption of red meat such as pork and beef and food high in sugar, salt, and fat. Limit intake of saturated and trans fats from pastries, pizza, burgers, and processed meals. Keep in mind Kumainment 8: "Hinay-hinay sa pagkain, mamantika at matatamis."
Significant lifestyle changes should be done to prevent and manage hypertension. Stop smoking and limit alcohol intake. Know the source of your stress and try your best to avoid it. Check blood pressure and drink maintenance medications regularly. Be active and maintain a normal weight. Get enough sleep.
Live a healthy lifestyle to prevent hypertension. Live well and longer.
