Keep your kidneys in good shape National Kidney Month is observed every June in accordance with Presidential Proclamation No. 184, s.1993, with the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) as the lead agency for the celebration. This year, the celebration focuses on the theme, "Batong Malakas sa Panibagong Bukas.". The theme aims to promote and raise public awareness on kidney disease prevention during these difficult times.

Various conditions can lead to kidney disease. Infections of the kidney and urinary tract, the development of stones, and hypertension are some of the most common diseases that damage the kidneys which can develop into renal failure. Diabetes, use of drugs, and intake of herbal medicine, solvents, and insecticides may also cause damage to the kidneys.  In addition, a family history of kidney disease and being over the age of 60 are also risk factors. According to the National Kidney Foundation, these risk factors increase due to poor eating habits, smoking, and obesity.

The NKTI also reveals that every year, around 10,800 Filipinos have chronic kidney disease, with 40,000 patients undergoing dialysis. Kidney diseases often cannot be cured, but they can be highly prevented through healthy eating and lifestyle modification.

Eating healthy foods is one of the strategies to prevent and manage kidney diseases. Eat more vegetables and fruits. Limit intake of processed meats and consume foods low in salt, fat, sugar, and potassium. Food preparation could also be a factor in making the diet healthy. Choose steaming, boiling, or broiling instead of frying to reduce fat consumption.

Smoking and alcohol intake should be avoided as well. Always adhere to the 10 Kumainments, particularly Kumainment # 8, "Hinay hinay sa maalat, matatamis, at matatabang pagkain." Exercise regularly and maintain a healthy weight.

Drinking enough water every day is essential for good health. Drink at least 8 glasses of water daily to keep hydrated and lower the risk of developing urinary tract infection and kidney stones. Avoid taking medications or herbal supplements without a doctor’s advice.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Have an annual physical check-up. Take medications regularly if hypertensive and diabetic. Monitor daily your blood sugar and blood pressure to ensure that they are within normal levels.

Remember, prevention is better than cure. Keep your kidneys in good shape – “Batong malakas ay kailangan sa panibagong bukas.”
