2022 NCM CelebrationThe National Nutrition Council - NCR joins the nation in the celebration of the 30th National Children’s Month this November 2022 with the theme: "Kalusugan, Kaisipan, at Kapakanan ng Bawat Bata Ating Tutukan!". This year’s celebration focuses on the mental health and well-being of every child amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

By the virtue of Republic Act 10661, National Children’s Month is celebrated every November of each year which seeks to instill the significance of children’s rights in Filipino consciousness. The lead agencies in the preparation and implementation of its activities are the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the National Youth Commission (NYC), and the Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC).

Childhood and adolescence are key stages of life wherein rapid growth and development of the brain take place. The acquired cognitive and social-emotional skills of children influence their mental health which will affect their adult roles in society.

According to WHO, mental health conditions such as childhood epilepsy, developmental disabilities, depression, anxiety, and behavioral disorders, are major causes of illness and disability among young people. Worldwide, 10% of children and adolescents experience mental disorders and suicide is the fourth leading cause of death in 15-19 years old. Addressing mental health in childhood and adolescence improves opportunities as they turn into adulthood.

Various factors are to be considered in improving mental health. For children, it is important to give them their rights such as basic needs including a balanced diet, adequate clothing, sufficient shelter, and proper healthcare. Providing them with their rights leads to an active lifestyle making them physically and mentally healthy.
