The Provinces of Cavite, Laguna and Rizal  are now under  “NCR Plus Bubble”  and  “Strict General Community Quarantine” as additional measures to address the rising cases of Covid-19 in the country. This is line with Resolution No. 104, issued by the IATF  which includes additional restrictions and observance of stricter health protocols, from  March 22 to April 4 this year,  in areas where there is a surge of cases of the viral disease.

NNC Calabarzon,  however,  will  ensure  food security in the provinces  in the region under the NCR Plus Bubble. The Nutrition Action Officers   (NAO)  of the provinces will be the strong force behind  the remedial steps to be taken.

The NAOs  are called  to assist the communities  on various approaches to  food production and  home and community–based gardening. With their help,  households will be able to secure food during this time where there are  limited food supplies.

Communities are likewise reminded that only  essential travels are allowed. Thus , they have to be aware of the impact of the reduction of workforce in establishments  and its effects on the procurement capability  and food security in every family.

In the “2020 Rapid Nutrition Assessment Survey”  conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), results show that 62.1% of the surveyed households experienced moderate or severe food insecurity in the high risk areas.

In the same survey, the impact of food insecurity was highest in households with children (74.7%) and pregnant members (80.8%) than in households without such members. In the current  situation, households are bound  to experience the  same challenges  again. Thus, families  need to adopt effective  food coping strategies to survive and  to  maintain a healthy and nutritious diet.

To mention, it is  also of vital  importance  to   address  other   priority concerns such as employment, food security, food accessibility, access to health and nutrition programs  to prevent  increasing occurrences of nutrient deficiencies and undernutrition among children and pregnant women. Nutrient deficiencies and undernutrition  can lead to frequent illnesses that  can weaken the immune system and  increase susceptibility to COVID–19 and other viral infections.

With NNC  Calabarzon (under NNC Regional Office) however, the  role of ensuring  that  Region 4A stakeholders are able to access food and  acquire nutrition services,  are continuously assured.  The agency  is  also  duty-bound to monitor the operations and nutrition projects of our LGUs.

Through combined efforts in governance,  and through  the  participation and cooperation of communities at stake, food security and the fight against nutrient deficiencies and undernutrition are possible.
