ust article 4aWith the goal of providing continuous technical assistance to different institutions, agencies and universities, the National Nutrition Council (NNC) gladly accepted the request to vet on the project proposals of the junior students of UST under the Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Dietetics (BSND).

The project proposals presented by the 12 groups last November aim to help improve the nutrition situation of two barangay project sites in the city of Tayabas (Barangay Camaysa and Barangay Opias). The BSND students who are assigned in Barangay Opias believe that following the NNC’s nutrition projects will address the current health and nutrition issues of the barangay. These nutrition projects are:

  • Lutong Opias: A Cooking Demonstration of Nutritious Recipes for the Different Life Stages and Cookfest Competition for Barangay Opias’ Own Recipe Book;

The project proposals were assessed and evaluated based on nine (9) parameters such as background or rationale, objectives, project design, selected targets or project beneficiaries, collaboration, sustainability, cost-benefits, references, and organization of the proposal.

The projects were presented via online by the students during the “BSND Public Health Nutrition Project Proposal Defense” held via zoom last November 29.

Accordingly, three (3) projects were chosen as the “Best Nutrition Project” and they are:

  • Heart to Heart Talk: “Tension ay Labanan, Puso ay Ingatan” by “Group 2 BSND 3N4 Students”
  • Halika NANAY! Wastong Nutrisyon Ating Naisin Akmang Pagkain ating Yakapin by “Group 6 BSND 3N4 Students”
  • Sweetheart’s Club Playlist: Nutrition Education Towards Good Health and Well-being for Diabetic and Hypertensive Residents and At-Risk Group in Barangay Opias, by “Group 6 BSND 3N3 students”

NNC Calabarzon’s RNPC, Ms. Carina Santiago was one of the reactors in the said presentation. In her message, she encouraged the BSND Junior students to help in the dissemination of the government’s efforts in combating malnutrition.

The government’s efforts highlight the PPAN strategic thrust of focusing on the First 1000 days of life and the continuous delivery of nutrition interventions during emergencies and disasters and further identification of nutrition interventions that are feasible and will aid in the nutrition of the community especially in this time of Covid-19 pandemic.

Ms. Santiago also reiterated that the student’s role and support in these efforts are vital since they are active in social media platforms and are believed to continue the nutrition initiatives towards zeroing malnutrition and having a nutrition-resilient community.

Professor Eleanor Sibug, the BSND course facilitator was grateful and happy for the result of the presentations and recommendations provided to the students. She believes that the projects will help improve their outlook and perceptions in addressing the nutrition situation at the grassroots level and empower them with the first-hand knowledge generously shared by the reactors.

The 12 proposed nutrition projects will be implemented this year in Barangay Camaysa and Barangay Opias.
