dwmm article BNS training26 January 2022 – In being true to its commitment of strengthening the competencies of various nutrition stakeholders through public education, capacity building and skills development -- NNC Calabarzon recently provided online technical assistance to the seven Barangay Nutrition Scholars of the  Municipality of Rizal, Laguna.

The mandatory “Basic Course Training” was planned and conducted by the Municipal Nutrition Committee (MNC) of Rizal  and Mr. Maku Almario (Municipal Nutrition Action Officer (MNAO) of Rizal)  as early as January.  It was  successfully facilitated  by  Mr. Edward  Paglinawan  ( NO II) and  Mr. Darrenz William  Mateos (NO I).

According to MNAO Almario, the capacity building “serves as primer in enhancing the competencies of the Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) who are the trusted coordinators and implementors of nutrition PPAs in the community.” It is also  intended  to ensure that the BNSs are fully equipped with the right knowledge and skills which are  vital in the delivery of quality nutrition programs, projects, and activities at the grassroots level.

In addition, the technical support will improve the nutrition situation of the LGU’s preschool children, pregnant and lactating women given the  right nutrition information that will  be disseminated and that will   build the BNSs  confidence in delivering the PPAN programs.

The selected resource persons from NNC successfully tackled  the topics on Module 1:  the “ BNS program” or PD 1569; the roles, and functions of the BNS; and the knowledge, skills and core values of BNSs.

MNAO Almario who was happy and thankful to all the participants, expressed his heartwarming appreciation to Ms. Carina Z. Santiago (RNPC) and staff of NNC Calabarzon for the immediate response given to their invitation and to the technical assistance extended to them.

The newly trained BNSs are expected to carry out  their duties in their respective barangays and are encouraged to continuously hone their knowledge and skills for better and quality nutrition service the public and the nutritionally vulnerable groups.
