Home Gardening smgtThe world took an unpredictable turn due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The disease continues to beget not just mortality and morbidity to the world, but also food insecurity, which can lead to hunger, malnutrition, and worst, death.

Due to the community quarantine setting, working individuals are forced to stay at home with the majority having no income to suffice their daily needs, especially food.  Also, mobility is limited, thus food availability and accessibility are affected. The community quarantine limits the mobility of the people, and thus, everyone was advised to stay at home and to only go out when necessary. Along this line is the dilemma on limited grocery trips. Everyone needs to be smart and wise in buying food to ensure that there is enough food stored to cater the needs of the whole family for the rest of the days or weeks until the next grocery trip.

During this crisis, it is important to take extra precautions to make our family safe especially if a member of the family has to go outdoors for necessary activities such as buying food and/or medicines.

Follow these tips when buying groceries:

  • Plan your meals. Meal planning is the act of thinking about what you and your whole family will eat for a specific duration of time, e.g., 1 week. To ensure that you get to maintain eating healthy and nutritious foods at the right portions, use the Pinggang Pinoy as a guide. Also, include in your plan recipes utilizing leaf-overs to avoid food wastage. Be creative!
