“If you survive, tell the people that the women of the Philippines did their part in making the ember sparks of truth and liberty alive till the last moment.” - Josefa Llanes Escoda, during the World War II.

Josefa Llanes-Escoda is popularly known as the woman on the one-thousand-peso bill. You may also recognize her as the founder of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines. She trained young women to become girl scout leaders, then proceeded to organize the Girl Scouts of the Philippines. On 26 May 1940, President Manuel L. Quezon signed the charter of the Girl Scouts of the Philippines and she became the group's first National Executive.
What not many know, however, is that she played a pivotal role in offering aid to Filipino soldiers in World War II. As the Japanese Army pushed deeper in the country during the World War II - 1944, news of the underground activities of Josefa Llanes Escoda and her husband Antonio reached far and wide. The couple had intensified their activities of supplying medicines, foods, clothes and messages to both Filipino war prisoners and American internees in concentration camps.

“I want more people to get into dairying. I was inspired by the cows in Switzerland; maybe in the Philippines, we can dedicate the highlands where wala nang tumutubo na kahoy, but there’s grass for cows and goats. Doon tayo sa malalamig, doon sa kung saan makakapag-produce ng magagandang damo. Then we can have nice dairy farms, and those in the highlands who can’t get work get a steady livelihood. Dadami ang gatas at makakagawa tayo ng murang keso.” – Olive Puentespina during an interview dated August 16, 2018.
Slowly but surely, Malagos Chocolate is becoming a well-known name outside of Davao, especially because of their award-winning chocolates. Once, a trip to Davao meant bringing home durian delicacies in a variety of forms; now, pasalubong from the Durian Capital of the Philippines also includes Malagos’ single-origin, bean-to-bar dark chocolate.

In a country where rice is the staple food, cheese, much less artisanal cheese, is yet to thrill the Filipino palate.

Pilipinas Kontra Gutom launched

MANILA, Feb. 22 --  Lahat kasali, lahat kasalo. This is the rallying call of Pilipinas Kontra Gutom (PKG), a national, multi-sectoral anti-hunger movement that was formally launched on Monday, 22 February 2021 by government and private sector partners that will work together on various programs with a common goal: one million fewer hungry Filipinos by 2022.

With the support of private sector, non-government organizations, and civil society groups, and spearheaded by the government’s Task Force Zero Hunger (TFZH) chaired by Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles, PKG is adopting a whole-of-nation approach to achieve its immediate and long-term goals of addressing involuntary hunger and malnutrition in the Philippines––an urgent concern given the millions of families that grapple with hunger in the country.

Speaking at the PKG virtual launch program, Nograles thanked all the groups and organizations “that recognize the importance of battling hunger and have committed to work for a hunger-free Philippines."

"Hunger is a silent enemy that can no longer be ignored; maraming apektado, at maraming kailangan tulungan. In our campaign against hunger, we should be all in, all out––anyone who can pitch in should help, and those who can help should go all out” the Cabinet Official said.
