The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the department responsible for the coordination of science and technology-related projects, is looking for bakery shop owners and operators who can be potential technology adopters of the ready-to-eat bread called Enhanced Nutribun, also called as e-Nutribun, developed by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST-FNRI). Only last 7 September 2020 the e-Nutribun technology was disseminated through a Technology Investment Forum conducted virtually for Eastern Visayas participants.

Four local government units (LGU's) under the Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) Program in the Province of Leyte actively integrate the nutrition programs, projects, and activities (PPA's) in the 2021 Annual Investment Program (AIP) last August 2020.
The Municipality of Hilongos was scheduled first in the conduct of the Nutrition Integration Workshop on 11-12 August and was followed by the City of Baybay on 24-25 August, and the municipalities of Abuyog and Mahaplag on 25-26 and 27-28 August, respectively. The two-day workshop on Integrating Nutrition has identified scaled-up nutrition actions with corresponding budgets in their 2021 AIP.

PALO, LEYTE – Amid the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Municipality of Hilongos, Leyte ventured to conduct the Workshop on Integrating Nutrition in the 2021 Annual Investment Program (AIP) on 11-12 August 2020 at the Hon. Loreto P. Lora’s Hall, Brgy. Western Poblacion, Hilongos, Leyte.
This year, each local government unit (LGU) is expected to finalize their scaled-up nutrition actions with corresponding budgets in their 2021 and 2022 AIP, based on the priorities of their updated Provincial Development and Physical Framework Plan (PDPFP), Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP), Local Development Investment Program (LDIP), with focus on the first 1,000 days and factoring the ongoing and post-pandemic situation.

Most Filipinos are not aware that obesity is a chronic disease. Many think that obesity is just a cosmetic concern caused by the laziness or the refusal to “eat less” of the individual living with it. In actuality, obesity is more complex than that.
Obesity, as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), is the abnormal or excessive fat accumulation in the body that elevates the risk of common non-communicable diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke, and various forms of cancer. It is a chronic disease that may be caused by a variety of factors such as genetic, psychological, socio-cultural, economic, and environmental factors.

PALO, LEYTE – As part of the 46th Nutrition Month Celebration, the National Nutrition Council Region 8 spearheaded the first-ever virtual Barangay Nutrition Scholars’ (BNS) Day in the region on 24 July 2020 through the virtual meeting platform, Google Meet.
Dr. Catalino P. Dotollo, Jr., the Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator, shared in his message his sentiments towards the crucial role of the BNS in nutrition. The BNS play an integral role in preventing stunting and fostering healthier children in the barangay level. In times of the COVID-19 pandemic, the BNS are also at the forefront in ensuring the health and safety of the people.

As the world continues to fight and develop a vaccine to combat COVID-19, the Department of Health (DOH) celebrates the Breastfeeding Awareness Month with the theme “I-BIDA ang Pagpapasuso Tungo sa Wais at Malusog na Pamayanan” that aims to strengthen the importance of breastfeeding amidst the pandemic.
Breastfeeding is delineated by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the cornerstone of infant and young child survival, nutrition, development, and maternal health. It also reduces the baby’s risk of obesity, asthma, cardiovascular diseases, and diabetes (type 2), promotes cognitive development in children, reduces the mother’s risk of breast and ovarian cancer, cardiovascular diseases, obesity, osteoporosis, and are less susceptible to chronic and infectious diseases.
The National Nutrition Council actively promotes exclusive breastfeeding of babies up to 6 months without giving any food, liquid, or water and providing timely, safe, appropriate, and adequate complementary food to children from 6 months with continued breastfeeding up to 2 years of age and beyond.
