Baguio City - The Province of Ilocos Norte in close coordination with the National Nutrition Council- Regional Office I and LUPangIlocos Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) Federation, Inc. successfully hosted this year’s 7th Regional BNS Congress with the theme: ““LUPANG ILOCOS BNSs: Itaguyod ang Healthy Diet sa Pamayanan, Upang Wastong Nutrisyon ay Makamtan!” held on September 11, 2017 at the Baguio Convention Center. This annual event was attended by around 1,200 BNSs coming from the Provinces of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, La Union and Pangasinan. A record breaking in the number of attendees.
Mr. Danilo P. Posion, BNS of Aruin, Tagaytay City and 2015 National Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar graced the event and served as the crowning guest of honor and keynote speaker. In his message, he inspired his co-BNSs on his journey towards being a nutrition champion.
“A good volunteer must be patient and effective. Given the limited resources in our respective barangays, we must be creative and resourceful. Tap every opportunity and conquer all the challenges we encountered,” he added.
Also, Mayor Mauricio Domogan of Baguio City warmly welcomed the participants and highly recognized the concerted efforts of the Barangay Nutrition Scholars not only in giving nutrition services but for the improvement of the quality of life of the people.

BAGUIO CITY – The National Nutrition Council Regional Office I conducted a back-to-back Training on Nutrition in Emergencies (NiEm) for Local Nutrition Clusters and Training on the Basic Course for Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) held on August 8-11, 2017 at Hotel Veniz, Baguio City. This was attended by around 50 participants regionwide for the two trainings.
Nutrition in Emergencies (NiEm) training for Local Nutrition Clusters targeted the municipalities of Ilocos Sur and Pangasinan - areas prone to emergencies, calamities and disasters in the region. The training aims to capacitate the participants on the nutrition intervention package during emergencies and formulation of Nutrition in Emergencies Preparedness, Response and Recovery Plan. Also, it aims to enjoin the participants to organize or reorganize their Local Nutrition Clusters in their respective municipalities in compliance to the Regional Development Council (RDC) Resolution No. 60 s. 2014 “Enjoining LGUs to organize their Local Nutrition Clusters”.
On the other hand, DOH Regional Office I provided funds for the training on the Basic Course of BNSs to refresh the officers of Regional, Provincial, City and Municipal BNS Federations and capacitate the newly designated Local Nutrition Action Officers in providing efficient and effective basic health and nutrition services to improve the nutrition situation in their respective areas. The training focused on the BNS program, roles and functions, community nutrition assessment and how-to-fill-up various BNS forms.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, LA UNION – The Regional Development Council-1 Chaired by Hon. Mayor Juan Carlo Medina of Vigan City unanimously approved the RSDC Resolution No. 4, s. 2017, “Requesting the RDC-ExCom to Enjoin All Regional Line Agencies and Local Government Units to Support the Implementation of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition for 2017-2022” during the Regional Development Committee-1 (RDC-1) Full Council Meeting cum Regional Development Plan (RDP) 2017-2022 Launching last July 12, 2017 at Oasis Country Resort and Hotel, City of San Fernando, La Union attended by Regional Directors of Line Agencies, Local Chief Executives from the different provinces, cities, and municipalities of Region 1 and Private Sectors Representatives. The resolution was presented by Regional Social and Development Committee (RSDC) Chair Dir. Alma Ruby Torio of DepEd.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, LA UNION- The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology- Regional Office I (BJMPRO-I) spearheaded the 3rd Chef Olympics tagged as ‘Ang Kusina ni Ma’am Elisa’ last August 3, 2017 at the BJMP Regional Office I, City of San Fernando, La Union as part of their 26th BJMPRO-I Anniversary Celebration. The National Nutrition Council-Regional Office I represented by Nutrition Officer II Mary Gene Contic and Nutrition Office I Wylibeth Lumpias were among the board of judges.
BJMPRO-I Regional Director Ms. Elisa Bernal Oreiro welcomed the guests especially each of the chosen best chefs representing the provinces of La Union, Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Eastern Pangasinan and Western Pangasinan. She explained that through this competition, they can collectively come up with new nutritious and affordable recipes to be served to inmates in the region.
Each of the contestants were requested to formulate nutritious menu for a day completing breakfast, lunch and dinner and were given a Php 1,200.00 budget good for 20 people. They were observed from purchasing and marketing, to preparation, and presentation of menu they have chosen to prepare.
Nutrition Officer II Ms. Mary Gene Contic together with Nutrition Officer I Ms. Wylibeth Lumpias of the National Nutrition Council-Regional Office I, and Ms. Arlene Dejos of Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University (DMMMSU)-HRM Department Chair served as judges.

Around 900 Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) from all over North Luzon converged on 19-20 July in Angeles City, Pampanga for their biennial national conference to renew their commitment to end malnutrition in their respective barangays. As community-based volunteers, Barangay Nutrition Scholars bridge the gap between families and service providers to deliver nutrition and related services. The BNS are members of the LuzViMin BNS Federation which is composed of about 42,000 BNSs nationwide.
With the theme, “PPAN Para sa Bayan, Nutrisyon at Serbisyo”, the conference underscores the significant role of the BNSs in the implementation of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) 2017-2022 as the country’s framework of action for nutrition improvement. The PPAN was recently launched in Iloilo City last May.

CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, LA UNION – The National Nutrition Council – ROI actively supported the 2017 Nutrition Month Celebration of National Economic Development Authority – ROI as they organized the Healthy Diet Lecture and Chicken-based Cooking Contest last July 17, 2017 at the Regional Office of NEDA-1, City of San Fernando, La Union.
Ms. Mary Gene Contic, Nutrition Officer II of NNC-ROI presented the 2017 Nutrition Month Talking Points focusing in the promotion of healthy diet in workplaces and how we can bridge the gaps on healthy diet through passage of policies supporting to improve the food environment. Followed by the lecture, Ms. Contic served as the lone judge to the annual cooking contest emphasizing healthy and nutritionally adequate menu of NEDA employees. For this year, it is on chicken based menu, with criteria on originality, healthfulness, taste, and overall participation. The activity aims to create awareness and promote inexpensive healthy diet. The declared winner is Saranay Winter with their menu One-Pot Chicken Meal, a one-dish complete meal with rice (GO), chicken (GROW) and vegetables (GLOW) that can also reflect the Pinggang Pinoy.
