SAN FERNANDO CITY, LA UNION – The National Nutrition Council-ROI in coordination with Region 1 Advocates for Gender Equality (RAGE-1) joined the kick-off activity of 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW) with the theme: “VAW-free community starts with ME!”, last November 24, 2017 at San Fernando City Plaza, La Union.
Fun walk, film showing, and symposium were among the kick-off activities participated by 25 regional member agencies including NNC-ROI. The RAGE will spearhead series of activities to be participated by various sectors as part of the awareness campaign and a culminating activity will be held on December 12, 2017 at Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, San Fernando City La Union to complete the 18-Day campaign.

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – National Nutrition Council Region 1 in partnership with the Department of Health Region 1 recently held its Regional Dissemination of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) 2017 – 2022 cum exhibits at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Regional Office here last Thursday, Nov. 16, 2017.
Hon. Juan Carlo S. Medina, Mayor of Vigan City, Ilocos Sur and Chairperson of the Regional Development Council in his keynote message gave emphasis on the need for region 1 to enhance existing cooperation amongst local government units, led by the national government and the different sectors of the society to address development problems especially those that pertain to nutrition. He also shared several best practices of the heritage city in addressing their problems on nutrition as a fourth-class municipality and enjoined other local government units to broaden the scope of their commitment in participation to the PPAN.

AGOO, LA UNION – The National Nutrition Council Regional Office I joins the celebration of the Department of Social Welfare and Development - FOI Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) Family Day 2017 with the theme: “Pamilyang Pilipino, Handang Tumawid sa Pag-unlad!” held last September 30, 2017 at Don Mariano Memorial Marcos State University (DMMMSU) South La Union Campus (SLUC), Agoo, La Union.
The event was attended by around 400 4Ps families from the different provinces of Region 1. Various regional line agencies were present to offer information and health services like Philhealth, Commission on Population-ROI, Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center (ITRMC), Department of Health and other Non-Government Organizations.
As one of the active partners of DSWD, NNC annually attends the event and delivers the following health and nutrition services: Weight and Height taking, Computation of Body Mass Index (BMI), Computation of Desirable Body Weight (DBW) and Nutrition Counseling for different age groups. Around 82 beneficiaries availed the said services.
SB Member Chairperson for Committee on Social Services Hon. Antonio Eslao of Agoo, La Union emphasized in his message that every tomorrow will be better for we do good things today. “Every local government unit and agencies willingly extend their help to achieve a better tomorrow, and where you are today will not always be where you will stay. Tatawid tayo…tatawid tayo tungo sa Pag-unlad!” he said.

The 3rd Nutriskwela Community Radio Station in Ilocos Region - “Radyo Karruba can now be heard in the airwaves. TheNational Nutrition Council (NNC) who is instrumental in the establishment of the radio station has launched this Community Radio Station on 23 October 2017 at the White Rocks Restaurant, Burgos, Ilocos Norte.
A hands-on training for the Radyo Karruba personnel and members of the newly organized Community Radio Council (CRC) was conducted by the MQ Media Zone to capacitate them for an efficient operation of the radio station.
Other Nutriskwela Radio Stations in the Region are Radyo Kailian in Ilocos Sur Polytechnic State College (ISPSC), Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur and Radyo Kabinnadang in ISPSC, Cervantes, Ilocos Sur.

ALAMINOS, PANGASINAN- The City of Alaminos successfully held this year’s Buntis/Baby Summit under the program, Early Childhood Care and Development for the First 1000 Days (ECCD F1K) with the theme, “Anak Ko, Mahal Ko” at Don Leopoldo Sison Convention Center last September 22, 2017. The event was attended by more than 500 pregnant and lactating women coming from all the barangays of the city.
Alaminos City Mayor Arthur F. Celeste graced the event by welcoming everyone and thanked the National Nutrition Council for the support through the ECCD-F1K program which is in line with one of the city’s priority agenda of ensuring health and nutritional needs of their citizen. He then encouraged the attendees to avail of the services of the city government particularly on health and nutrition.

DAGUPAN CITY – The Municipality of Bayambang, Pangasinan is now all set for the Nutrition Early Warning System (NEWS) quarterly survey after the conduct of the last leg of NEWS training particularly the Household Level Survey Enumerators training spearheaded by the National Nutrition Council-Regional Office I held last October 3-4, 2017 at Leisure Coast Resort, Bonuan Binloc, Dagupan City. The said training was attended by the nutrition prime movers of the selected sentinel barangays of the municipality namely: Bacnono, MH Del Pilar, Sanlibo, San Gabriel 2nd and Tococ West.
The NEWS project is one of NNC’s commitments in alleviating hunger, malnutrition and poverty in the municipality of Bayambang, Pangasinan. Municipal Nutrition Action Officer Venus Bueno explained that the NEWS will surely help the municipality in taking concrete actions to address its hunger and high malnutrition rate. She said during the NEWS training for household data collectors that the NEWS Team will start its periodic data collection on the second week of October this year.
“The Municipal Nutrition Committee (MNC) chaired by Mayor Dr. Cezar T. Quiambao is very committed and is looking forward for a very successful, fruitful and meaningful implementation of the project. Our beloved Bayambang will surely benefit from it,” he added.
NEWS is a form of monitoring and analysis of relevant information which are being collected periodically to determine status of food security in the area which may foretell possible crisis such as food shortage or health problem that will provide evidence-based information to the key officials in planning and executing appropriate and timely food security and nutrition interventions.
