TK LaunchingThe National Nutrition Council Region IX (NNC9) successfully held the Ceremonial Launching of the Tutok Kainan: Dietary Supplementation Program (DSP) in the Provinces of Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga del Norte on February 10 and 11, 2022, respectively. The aforementioned activity serves as the kick-off in the actual implementation of the said program in the two provinces. The successive events were held in the Municipality of Mahayag for the Province of Zamboanga del Sur (ZDS) and in Dipolog City for the Province of Zamboanga del Norte (ZDN). A total of one hundred fifty-two (152) participants from face-to-face and via Google Meet virtual platform was recorded. Among these are the twenty-four (24) pregnant women beneficiaries together with the virtual presence of the Cabinet Secretary and IATF-ZH Chair Atty. Karlo Alexei B. Nograles and the Assistant Secretary of Health and NNC Executive Director Dr. Azucena M. Dayangirang who delivered their Inspirational Message. Likewise, RNAHC Chair and DOH9 OIC-Director Dr. Joshua G. Brillantes, NNC9 RNPC Nimfa D. Ekong, Local Nutrition Committee members of the host LGUs, Nutrition Action Officers, Local Nutrition Program Coordinators, representatives of DAR9 and concerned ARBOs, and other local nutrition program implementers of Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga del Norte were also present both physically and virtually. Further, the event was streamed live via the NNC9 official Facebook page that garnered five hundred seventy (570) views on both occasions.

As malnutrition remains an alarming problem in our country with the threat of being aggravated further in this time of COVID-19 pandemic, this poses a big challenge for the government to address this deteriorating concern. In fact, stunting among children under-five years old continues to be a major nutrition problem not just here in the Philippines but globally, affecting millions. To put into context, based on recent global surveys, Filipinos remain the second to the shortest in the ASEAN region, 9th in the double burden of stunting, and 10th in the global burden of wasting. One of PPAN’s strategic thrusts is the focus on the First 1000 days, the period from conception up to the child’s second birthday being considered as the “Golden window of opportunity” in order for the child to achieve his or her full potential in the different aspects of growth and development.

LanzonesLanzones or Langsat are trees from the Mahogany family, scientifically known as Lansium parasiticum. It bears a small, tangy, sour, and sweet combination of edible fruits that are similar to potatoes on outer appearance, and inside they have white flesh containing inedible, bitter seeds. Lanzones are most commonly found in Southeast Asian regions and cultivated in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Sumatra. Its larger variety is called Duku. Because of its sweet and sour taste, some people find it similar to pomelo. Its flesh is juicy and translucent, refreshing when eaten and among the exotic fruits. Sominot BNS TrainingThe Municipality of Sominot, in collaboration with the National Nutrition Council Region 9 (NNC9) and the Provincial Nutrition Office of Zamboanga del Sur, held their Training on Basic Course for BNS from February 2 to 4, 2022. Led by their Municipal Nutrition Action Officer, Ms. Cheryl A. Sumagang, the capacity development activity was attended by a total of twenty-eight (28) Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) from eighteen barangays. This three-day training aims to: 1. Explain the legal mandates and rationale of the BNS program; 2. Discuss the basic concepts of food and nutrition; 3. Demonstrate the skills needed in performing the roles and tasks of BNSs; 4. Describe the nutrition program management at the barangay level and in the context of the local development system; and 5. Illustrate the numerous roles and responsibilities of BNSs in the context of nutrition program management at the barangay level.

SaluyotSaluyot leaves (Corchorus olitorius) are leafy vegetables that some of us are hesitant to eat because it is slimy.
