Ear Care DayHear this! March 3 is the “International Ear Care Day”. It has been observed every year to raise public awareness on the importance of self-ear care and safe listening as a means of maintaining good hearing across the life course and to avoid deafness and hearing impairment.

As we advance in the use of our digital technology most especially during this time of the pandemic, we also increase our vulnerability to developing hearing loss due to unsafe use of personal audio devices such as smartphones, MP3 players, laptops, etc. for a long duration; exposure to damaging levels of sound at entertainment venues including nightclubs, bars, pubs, and sporting events; frequent listening at high volume during virtual meetings, classes, webinars and etc., and most importantly, due to improper ear hygiene care.

10 KumainmentsThe National Nutrition Council, the country’s policy-making and coordinating body on nutrition under the Department of Health, pushed for the “10 Kumainments” as the simplified and easy to recall Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos. The 10 Kumainments point to advance positive nutrition practices to anticipate ailing health and energize the selection of a healthy way of life.  The national awareness campaign on the “10 Kumainments” is carried out in 17 regions of the country with the help and support from the Local Government Units (LGU) all geared towards promoting good nutrition and to eventually eradicating malnutrition in the country. Here’s the list of the 10 Kumainments:

Steam CookingCooking is the process of making uncooked food more edible to eat. Among the methods of cooking is steaming which is common and simple to follow. Foods cooked through steaming are beneficial to all. It is a way of cooking that needs moist heat. The heat is made through boiling water which vaporizes into steam. This in turn brings heat to the food and cooks them. Unlike boiling, the food is cut loose from the water and most effectively comes into direct contact with the team. Once the water reaches approximately 100 degrees Fahrenheit, the steaming procedure begins. Water boils at 212 degrees Fahrenheit, therefore the best temperature for the food cooks is at 212 degrees.

In this form of cooking method, you simply need two simple pieces of equipment to steam food on the stovetop: a pot and steamer equipment. The pot is stuffed with a little amount of water. This is often heated to a simmer and the food to be cooked is placed in a steamer basket suspended above the liquid, and therefore the pot is then covered allowing the hot steam to circulate via the pot and cooks the food very quickly. This way of cooking is the concept of "compartment steaming." The bamboo steamers or banana leaves utilized in Asian delicacies are examples of a compartment steamer.

MelasmaMelasma is an ordinary skin condition that means “black spot”. People having this condition may experience light brown, dark brown, and/or blue-gray patches on their skin. It may appear as flat patches or freckle–like spots and is most likely to affect areas in your face, including cheeks, upper lip, forehead, nose, and also in your forearms. This skin condition is called the “mask of pregnancy” because it normally affects pregnant women. Melasma generally darkens and lightens over time, regularly getting worse during the summer season and getting better during winter or cold weather.

Dandruff flare upsEver wondered why you experience itching in your head? Maybe it's because of dandruff. Itching sometimes is caused by a dandruff build-up in your head. Dandruff is a common condition that causes the skin on the scalp to flake. It may be contagious and for some, serious. But it can be embarrassing and difficult to treat. Mild dandruff can be treated with a gentle daily shampoo. If that doesn't work, a medicated shampoo may help. Symptoms may return later. Dandruff is considered to be a mild form of seborrheic dermatitis. In babies, seborrheic dermatitis is called Cradle Cap.

OreganoAccording to Medical News Today, Oregano (Origanum vulgare) is an herb from the mint, or Lamiaceae family used to flavor foods and treat health conditions. Oregano is related to joy and happiness by the Greeks and Romans. The word "Oregano" derives from the Greek words “oros,” meaning mountain, and “ganos,” meaning joy. There are diverse types of oregano and the most common type is Oregano vulgare, also called Spanish thyme and wild marjoram.

Its flavor and scent are due to the antioxidants available in Oregano leaves, the antioxidants thymol, carvacrol, limonene, terpinene, ocimene, and caryophyllene. Oregano provides other antioxidants when people consume it within the diet. Oregano leaves are already used for thousands of years, within the Mediterranean region, people would use them as traditional and herbal medicine to treat illnesses like skins sores, muscles aches, asthma, cramps, diarrhea, indigestion, colds, and to boost overall health. Scientist continues to be in the process of doing more research to substantiate the health benefits of using oregano, but also there's some evidence that it might be an enormous help to fight bacteria, relieve inflammation, regulate blood sugar, and lipids, and fight cancer.
