CARAVAN 4The R9 Coaching, Assisting and Reaching Advocates Virtually to Advance in Nutrition (CARAVAN) Project of the National Nutrition Council IX (NNC9) persists to reinforce the Local Nutrition Workers’ (LNWs) capacity to perform their duties and functions. As a follow-through to the R9 CARAVAN Session 4 conducted last February 17, 2022, for the provinces of Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga Sibugay, and the cities of Zamboanga and Isabela, a special session was offered to the province of Zamboanga del Sur (ZDS) through Google Meet last February 22, 2022. This was due to conflict with other activities of the said province on the former schedule. The session aims to virtually continue in the provision of technical assistance to the local government units and local nutrition program and to guide accordingly our BNS in the filling-out of nutrition forms. The activity covers the discussion on the proper filling out of BNS Monthly Accomplishment Report (MAR), BNC reactivation or reorganization with sample Executive Report, keeping a BNS diary, 2022 eOPT Plus tools, how to make a Spot Map, and how to write substantial Minutes of a Meeting. A total of one hundred thirty-eight (138) Provincial/City/ Municipal Nutrition Action Officers, District/ City/ Municipal Nutrition Program Coordinators, Barangay Nutrition Scholars, and local nutrition implementers were in attendance in this virtual provision of technical assistance.

PPANDid you know that in the Philippines there is a blueprint called the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (2017-2022) or PPAN to address malnutrition in the country that is formulated under the leadership of the National Nutrition Council? PPAN is the country’s response to reduce malnutrition and improve the nutritional wellbeing of Filipinos. It is an integral component and a companion plan of the Philippine Development Plan which provides the framework for improving the nutritional status of the Filipinos.

BNSAre you passionate about assisting someone you think needs help? Do you have the humanitarian qualities of working for your community?  Do you want the nutritional well-being of your fellowmen to be ensured? If you are hardworking, dedicated, and committed with some sense of leadership, then you have what it takes to be a BNS. A Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) is a community-based volunteer worker who assists the government in the delivery of nutrition and related services in the barangays. BNS’s deployment in every barangay is mandated by the Presidential Decree (PD) 1569. This law mandates the National Nutrition Council (NNC) to administer the BNS Program in coordination with the local government units (LGUs) and as such is tasked to develop capacities of BNSs. It also aims to provide at least one BNS per barangay in the country to monitor the nutritional status of children and other nutritionally at-risk or vulnerable groups and be able to link them with nutrition and nutrition-related service providers.

Making Nutrition TrendingThe National Nutrition Council Region IX (NNC9) successfully held the 1-day live-in Training on the Development of Key Nutrition Messages using Digital Media in the Provinces of Zamboanga Sibugay, Zamboanga del Norte, and Zamboanga del Sur on February 23, 2022.  The aforementioned activity aims to capacitate the participants on how to improve their presentation skills in order to promote better and wider information dissemination and advocacies on nutrition using the digital platform. A total of sixty-five (65) participants from face-to-face and via the Google Meet virtual platform was recorded. Among these is the presence of the NNC9 regional staff, P/C/Municipal Nutrition Action Officers, Local Nutrition Program Coordinators, and other local nutrition program implementers. The activity was conducted with the special participation of Mr. Genrev A. Esguerra, Nutrition Officer II of the National Nutrition Council Nutrition Information and Education Division who shared his invaluable expertise as a Resource Speaker during the conduct of the training.
