Infographics Sight Saving MonthPursuant to the Proclamation No. 40, series of 1954 which was signed by former President Ramon Magsaysay on 5 July 1954, declaring the first week of August of every year as sight-conservation week. This year, the Philippines observes this proclamation with the theme “Universal Eye Health: No More Avoidable Blindness” to raise awareness among the general public about the significance of eye health and the prevention of blindness.

The human eye is a crucial and among the most intricate sense organs that allows us to learn more about our environment than we can with any of the other four senses combined. Nowadays, clear vision is of prime importance and necessary for carrying out everyday tasks with ease. However, according to estimates from the Department of Health (DOH) from 2017, there are 332,150 people in the Philippines who are bilaterally blind. Of these, 33%, or roughly 109,609, are blindness caused by cataracts, 25%, or 83,037, are blindness caused by refraction problems, and 14%, or 46,501, are blindness caused by glaucoma. The remaining instances are caused, among other eye conditions, by glaucoma, retinopathy, and maculopathy.

Article LNAP Formulation Workshop19 August 2022, Cagayan de Oro City – A total of 13 local government units (LGU) from Camiguin, Misamis Occidental, and Misamis Oriental areas crafted their Local Nutrition Action Plans (LNAP) for 2023-2025. This was done during the LNAP Formulation Workshop held 10-12 August 2022 at De Luxe Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City.

The objective of the workshop is for the LGUs to formulate LNAPs and integrate nutrition in their local development plans and budgets, and to facilitate and ensure funding of nutrition programs, especially activities in the First 1000 Days.

Talakag 2022 1st Sem LNEWS Monitoring

10 August 2022, Cagayan de Oro City – The local government unit (LGU) of Talakag, Bukidnon is one of the Local Nutrition Early Warning System for Food and Nutrition Security (LNEWS-FNS) Areas in Northern Mindanao. Regular monitoring is being conducted twice a year to assess the program implementation.

The LNEWS Core Group members, Household Data Collectors, and Municipal Nutrition Action Officer (MNAO) Rosa Ma. Theresa L. Nanolan together with Development Management Officer (DMO) II Arlie Joy O. Damiles convened last 5 August 2022 at the Municipal Audio-Visual Room, Talakag, Bukidnon to discuss the 2022 1st semester survey results.

MNAO Nanolan reported the 2022 first and second quarter monitoring results. She shared that the underweight and wasting among 0-59 months old children have no or minimal impact. While stunting in both first and second quarters is in warning alert status at 14.7% which is a medium public health significance based on World Health Organization (WHO) cut-off.

2022 NBAM

Breastmilk is an irreplaceable gift a mother can give to her baby. It is also the best food for babies in the first 1000 days of life. Aside from the nutrients and protection, breastfeeding offers several benefits to the mother and child.

In the Philippines, pursuant to the Republic Act (RA) No. 10028, the month of August is declared as National Breastfeeding Awareness Month (NBAM) to increase public awareness of the importance of breastfeeding. The month-long celebration is being led by the Department of Health (DOH).

This year’s celebration with the theme “Sama-samang Itaguyod Tamang Kaalaman at Kalinga sa Pagpapasuso” aims to strengthen the government, health system, workplaces, and communities to be educated and empowered to provide a nurturing environment for families in support to breastfeeding.

R10 Infographics Breastfeeding Seat Initiative Launching

8 August 2022, Cagayan de Oro City – Region 10 Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) Task Force led by the Department of Health Center for Health Development – Northern Mindanao (DOH CHD-NM) launched the designation of breastfeeding seats in Public Utility Buses (PUBs) regionwide. It was conducted along with the kick-off of the National Breastfeeding Awareness Month, which is celebrated every August by virtue of Republic Act No. 10028. This law mandates the establishment of lactation stations that is accessible to breastfeeding mothers in all facilities including public places.

The activity was held last 1 August 2022 at Kiosko, Divisoria, Cagayan de Oro City. It was attended by approximately 200 participants composed of the IYCF Task Force member agencies, Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) 10, Region 10 Bus Operators, representatives from Cagayan de Oro City Nutrition Office, and breastfeeding mothers from different barangays in the city.

By definition, family planning refers to means and methods that allow individuals to decide if and when to have children. This includes a wide range of contraceptives that include pills, implants, intrauterine devices, surgical procedures that limit fertility opportunities, and barrier methods such as condoms as well as non-invasive methods such as the calendar method and/or abstinence.

In the context of family planning, nutrition has myriad direct and indirect ways of outcome. A family with numerous children having no stable and improving economic capacity to provide the needs of the offspring could lead to detrimental effects on their nutrition and health status. Simply by not being able to provide basic necessities such as nutritious food and shelter. Food insecurity causes famine that would result to malnutrition. Consequently, malnutrition is the basic root of diseases and worst death.
