rev 2022 NM FB CoverEvery July, the campaign on Nutrition Month is held to raise Filipinos' knowledge of the value of nutrition and the provisions of Presidential Decree (PD) 491, or the Nutrition Act of the Philippines. The National Nutrition Council (NNC) is required by the said PD to lead and organize the national campaign.

This year’s Nutrition Month theme, "New normal na nutrisyon, sama-samang gawan ng solusyon!" calls for strengthened nutrition interventions and solidarity towards nutrition improvement as the country shifts towards living with the COVID-19 virus.

The campaign calls for a collective effort to improve nutrition as we move forward to a better new normal. The campaign aims to: 1) raise the awareness of the importance of nutrition in building resilience and recovery from the pandemic; 2) stimulate discussions among stakeholders on how to build back better the design, delivery, and scale-up of nutrition interventions; and 3) engage various sectors and the public in activities that promote nutrition.

48th NNC Anniversary27 June 2022, Cagayan de Oro City – The National Nutrition Council (NNC) celebrated its 48th Anniversary last 24 June 2022 via hybrid mode (onsite at NNC Central Office, Taguig City, and online via Zoom). The celebration was attended by approximately 150 participants, composed of the Internal Management Committee Members, Nutrition Program Coordinators (NPC) and all personnel from the 17 Regional Offices (RO) and NNC Central Office (CO). Nutrition Program Coordinator of NNC X, Ms. Gladys Mae S. Fernandez witnessed the celebration face-to-face, while the rest of her staff joined online.

The NNC was created in 1974 through Presidential Decree 491 and was mandated as the country's highest policy-making and coordinating body on nutrition.

Activities for the anniversary celebration started with a Thanksgiving Mass followed by the 48th NNC Anniversary Program proper. The program started with the presentation of service awards to 13 CO and RO employees who have been in public service for 40, 30, 20, and 10 years.

Infographics National Dengue Awareness MonthBy virtue of Proclamation No. 1204 series 1998, signed on 21 April 1998, June is declared as National Dengue Awareness Month. It is a periodic event that strengthens the advocacy of dengue prevention and control which requires collaborative efforts between national and local governments, as well as the corporate sector.

Dengue fever, often known as dengue, is an acute Flavivirus infection spread by day biting Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes in tropical and subtropical areas. It is the world's fastest-spreading vector-borne disease, with 100 countries affected. It is an acute viral infection that primarily affects young children and newborns and is now a year-round sickness.

According to the Department of Health (DOH), there are four serotypes of Dengue virus: DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4. The first infection with one of the four serotypes is usually mild or asymptomatic, but a second infection with another serotype might result in severe dengue fever.

19 Radyo Kalambuan monitoring25 June 2022, Cagayan de Oro City – Nutrition Officer I Vazamija Therese A. Villasi of National Nutrition Council Region X conducted the 2nd Quarter Nutriskwela Community Radio Station monitoring to Radyo Kalambuan DXNE 94.3 MHz at Media Center, Mindanao Civic Center, Tubod, Lanao del Norte last 22 June 2022.

Present during the monitoring were Mr. Ryan Requino, Ms. Creselyn B. Velasco and Mr. Julie Capol.

Since December 2021, Radyo Kalambuan was off-air due to Typhoon Odette damaging the station’s antenna. Per Mr. Requino, the antenna tower will be transferred to Brgy. Turong-turong, Tubod, Lanao del Norte since the location of the tower in Brgy. Guingona, Ozamiz City has electricity shortage. Further, there is no date yet as to the resumption of the station’s operations. Currently, they use online platform such as Facebook Live to continue their operations.

17 MANGO DIEZ19 June 2022, Cagayan de Oro City – The National Nutrition Council Region X facilitated the 2nd Quarter Media Advocates for Nutrition in Governance in Region 10 (MANGO DIEZ) Meeting last 7 June 2022 at Marianne Suites, Cagayan de Oro City. It was presided by Ms. Jasper Marie O. Rucat of the Philippine Information Agency 10 who serves as the MANGO DIEZ Ad Hoc Committee Chairperson.

The meeting was attended by eleven (11) partners composed of different media outlets representing radio, TV, print and social media.

One of the activities conducted during the meeting was the Information Sharing Session (ISS). This activity served as a venue to provide a refresher course to media partners on radio programming and hosting in the context of health and nutrition.

MELLPI Pro Refresher Orientation23 June 2022, Cagayan de Oro City – The National Nutrition Council Region X conducted a back-to-back MELLPI Pro Refresher Orientation for Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET) members and the local nutrition focal points (LNFPs) from the local government units (LGUs). This was held last 17 June 2022 through video conferencing.

The Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation Protocol (MELLPI Pro) is a mechanism to check LGUs’ and LNFPs’ performance in nutrition program management, and in carrying out their functions as nutrition workers, respectively.

A total of 11 RNET members and 81 LNFPs attended the refresher orientation in an effort to prepare for the series of M&E activities to be conducted in their areas.

NNC X through the leadership of Nutrition Program Coordinator Gladys Mae S. Fernandez apprised the participants on the updated guidelines and tools, as well as the awards mechanism of the MELLPI Pro. The discussions were appreciated by the participants as it would refresh them on the key points of MELLPI Pro and to help them prepare for the evaluation.

More schedules are expected this year as more LGUs and LNFPs are recovering from the demands of the COVID-19 pandemic. The NNC X will establish a set of schedules and coordinate with the RNET members, and concerned LGUs and LNFPs to finalize the face-to-face visits. (NO III Sheena Marie G. Talle)
