obesity epidemicIn 1997, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared obesity to be a critical concern for public health and an epidemic. The definitions of overweight and obesity include excessive or abnormal fat accumulation that could affect one's health. Obesity is described as a paradoxical form of malnutrition that, although consuming an excessive amount of energy, is linked to a deficiency in specific micronutrients. In addition to poor dietary choices and limited access to nutrient-rich foods, micronutrient deficiencies can also emerge from changes in nutrient absorption, distribution, or excretion, as well as from altered micronutrient metabolism resulting from systemic inflammation driven by obesity.

Obesity affects 800 million individuals globally, according to UNICEF (2022), meanwhile in the Philippines there are around 27 million Filipinos who are obese. Adult overweight and obesity rates have nearly doubled over the previous 20 years, rising from 20.2% in 1998 to 36.6% in 2019. Similarly, from 4.9% in 2003 to 11.6% in 2018, the prevalence rates of overweight and obesity among teenagers have more than doubled.

Most individuals require seven to nine hours of night sleep for healthy cognitive and behavioral functioning. According to several researches, sleep deprivation makes individuals more prone to distractions, poor cognition, slow reactions, and mood changes. Moreover, an increased risk for several diseases and medical complications, including obesity, has been associated with sleep loss.

Youth Empower smcAugust 30, 2022- The National Nutrition Council Davao Region conducted an online webinar entitled “Nutrition Teen Movers: A Webinar Empowering Youth in Promoting Nutrition” aimed to empower the youth to spark initiatives in taking action regarding health and nutrition.

NNC XI collaborated with partner regional stakeholders such as the Commission on Population and Development, National Youth Commission, the Sangguniang Kabataan, and academe represented by the University of Mindanao, University of Immaculate Conception, and Central Mindanao University. The said webinar held live via Zoom and FB Live was attended by over fifty (50) diverse participants coming from different schools and organizations in Davao City.
