IROONOur bodies require small amounts of minerals, and many minerals become toxic at higher concentrations. Iron, for example, is an essential mineral that is required for many cellular functions. However, like many other nutrients, excessive amounts are harmful. So, let’s take a look how important Iron is in our body.

What is Iron and What does it do?

Iron is an essential dietary mineral needed for growth and development. It is used by the body to produce hemoglobin, a protein found in red blood cells that transports oxygen from the lungs to the rest of the body, and myoglobin, a protein that provides oxygen to muscles. Iron is also important for a healthy immune system and in the production of some enzymes. If there is not enough iron in the body, we will not have enough red blood cells to transport oxygen which leads to extreme fatigue.

smc omega3Most of the types of fats required by the human body may be produced by it from other fats or raw materials. Omega-3 fatty acid, a polyunsaturated fatty acid, however, is an exception. It is essential; the body cannot produce them on its own and must obtain them from the diet. There are three primary omega-3s— eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) are mostly found in fish, they are commonly referred to as marine omega-3s, and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), the most common omega-3 fatty acid may be found in leafy green vegetables, flax seeds, and flaxseed oil.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) have anti-inflammatory, anti-apoptotic, and antioxidant properties that have protective benefits. Numerous overlapping action mechanisms may be involved in how EPA and DHA's neuroprotective properties function. A number of neurodegenerative, neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease may also benefit from omega-3, due to its neuroprotective effects.

Folic acidVitamin B9 also known as folate, is a water-soluble vitamin that can be found in a variety of foods. In the form of folic acid, it is also added to foods and offered as a supplement; this form is actually more readily absorbed than that obtained from dietary sources (85% vs. 50%, respectively). Folate participates in protein metabolism and aids in the formation of DNA and RNA. It is essential for the breakdown of homocysteine, an amino acid that, in excessive concentrations, can have negative effects on the body. Folate is essential during times of rapid growth, such as during pregnancy and fetal development, and is also required to generate healthy red blood cells.

Since folate can be found in a variety of foods, having a folate deficiency is rare. However, the following circumstances may increase people’s risk: alcoholism, pregnancy, intestinal surgeries or digestive disorders, and genetic variants. Signs and symptoms of deficiency includes megaloblastic anemia, weakness, fatigue, irregular heartbeat, shortness of breath, difficulty concentrating, hair loss, pale skin, and mouth sores.

Mindful EatingIn today’s fast-paced society, people are tempted by an abundance of food choices. Distractions also have shifted attention away from the actual act of eating toward computers, televisions, and smartphones. As a result, eating has devolved into a mindless act, often done quickly which is common in binge eating. Moreover, limiting energy intake and restricting food choices are common strategies for losing weight. However, these strategies have been shown to be ineffective in achieving long-term and sustainable weight reduction. Recently, mindful eating has gained popularity as an alternative weight-management strategy.

What is Mindful Eating?

Mindful eating is an approach to food that focuses on individuals’ sensual awareness and experience with food (Nelson, J.B, 2017). It is a powerful tool and a holistic way to approach health eating. Mindful eating entails making conscious food choices, becoming aware of physical and psychological hunger and satiety cues, and eating healthfully in response to those cues. It is said to be one component of developing healthy lifestyle habits that aid in the prevention of obesity and its associated health effects (Cooper H, 2016).
