Cebu City – The Central Visayas Association of Nutrition Action Officers, Inc. (CeVANAO, Inc.) invites all provincial, city, municipal and barangay nutrition action officers (P/C/M/BNAOs) to attend the 17th regional congress on 16 September 2022 at the Summit Galleria Hotel, Cebu City.

Anchored on the theme “Kalig-ong Nutrisyon, tubag sa pagtukod og maayong bag-ong NAOrmal!”, CeVANAO, Inc. has invited speakers to discuss topics on Nutrition Resiliency in the New Normal, Fad Diets: Advantages and Disadvantages, and Vlogging and Podcasting.

FEED

Cebu City – Feed the Children, one of the non-government organization-member of the Central Visayas Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) reaffirmed their engagement with the interagency body. The commitment was firmed up during the advocacy meeting held on 24 August with Feed’s Country Director, Ms. Ofelia R. Cardeno and Program Coordinator and RNC-TWG member, Ms. Marrianne Lyn L. Ramirez. The meeting was done via zoom conference call with Dr. Parolita A. Mission, Central Visayas’ Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator representing NNC 7. Nutritionist-Dietitian II of the DOH CV CHD/NNC 7 facilitated the meeting.

Nutrition Resilience Programs

Siquijor Province – NNC 7 calls upon local governments in Central Visayas to bolster its resilience-building programs to help prepare their areas against natural or man-made disasters. According to NPC Dr. Parolita A. Mission of NNC, one such example is the creation and intensification of a Food Security Committee or Task Force under the local nutrition committee in all local government units in Central Visayas. This will serve to achieve sustainable food security and nutrition.  NPC Dr. Mission added that with the current inflation rate of the country, it is high time to intensify the capacity of the LGU to produce food through rural and urban gardening programs such as backyard or household gardening, community or institutional gardening and farming. This program also creates venue to make livelihood through food processing and food trade industry and promote healthy living by consumption of fresh nutritious foods and help in building climate resilience and sustainable food system, the regional head of NNC further mentioned.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), NCDs affect 41 million people each year. NCDs, which include diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, stroke and chronic respiratory diseases, account for 68% of all deaths in the Philippines.

NCDs, also known as chronic diseases, are long-term illnesses caused by a combination of genetic, physiological, environmental, and behavioral factors. Nutrition plays a vital role in the management and prevention of these types of diseases. The food we eat daily has an effect in our body. The nutrients that we take can give benefits to the body. This also applies with foods that can affect the health of an individual when taken in large amounts. For example, excessive consumption of saturated and trans fatty acids, as well as increased consumption of salt and sugar, are risk factors for cardiovascular disease, including hypertension.
