web article photo1The National Nutrition Council (NNC) recently gathered radio station personnel and its institutional partners from its 44 Nutriskwela community radio stations from all over the country for the 9th National Conference of the Nutriskwela Community Radio Network Program. The annual conference, which was held in Iloilo City on  15-17 January 2019, was conducted to strengthen the operations of the stations to be able to promote nutrition and development in the broadcast areas. Updates on nutrition, community broadcasting and to share and discuss practices and concerns in managing and operating radio stations were also discussed.

It was emphasized that for positive nutrition behaviors to happen, the radio stations need to step up their programming on nutrition. Participants identified potential nutrition radio programs that could be aired in all the stations. Also, to further strengthen the network, participants agreed to organize the stations and the station personnel into an association. A working group was organized composed of various personnel from 7 Nutriskwela stations.

ASec/ED Flores together with the other members of the SUN Movement ExeCom during a roundtable discussionThe 2019 Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) Movement Executive Committee Retreat concluded on 29 January at the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland where members, including Assistant Secretary of Health and NNC Executive Director Maria-Bernardita Flores, reflected on joint efforts of the Movement in the past to scale up nutrition and plan the progress of the SUN Movement with a goal of ending all forms of malnutrition by 2030.

The SUN ExeCom also worked in breakout groups to tackle governance and stewardship, capacity development and knowledge sharing. ASec/ED Flores facilitated the breakout group on the 2019 SUN Global Gathering, which tackled the objectives, timing, host country selection, themes, among other concerns.

GAW 2019 Streamer Design

The Department of Health (DOH) today leads the nation in observing the Goiter Awareness Week (GAW) 2019 with the theme, “Goiter Sugpuin, Isip Patalinuhin, Iodized Salt Gamitin,” which aims to highlight the vital role of iodized salt in preventing thyroid disorders such as goiter. Partners and stakeholders like the Philippine Thyroid Association, Philippine Society of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism, Iodine Global Network, National Nutrition Council and DOST-FNRI will also disseminate information and educate the public on the effects of iodine deficiency.

Research Agenda Picture consultation 2018

The National Nutrition Council held a consultation workshop of its regional and central offices, and national partners on 01 August 2018 and 02 October 2018, respectively at the NNC Board Room to discuss the development of the first complementary nutrition research agenda of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN).

Representatives of the NNC regional and central offices brainstormed to identify research topics and themes in their respective regions and units to be included in the agenda for 2018-2022. Some themes are along nutrition programs in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas or GIDAs, indigenous people concern and implementation of the First 1000 Days program, to name a few.
