President Rodrigo Roa Duterte compared the malnutrition problem in the country as that of the drug menace, which should be stopped immediately so as not to compromise the future of our country.

Duterte through Secretary of Health Francisco Duque III made this commitment and call on all stakeholders to invest in nutrition and end malnutrition in his keynote address during the 2018 National Nutrition Awarding Ceremony at the Philippine International Convention Center, July 31.

“Good nutrition for everyone is everybody’s business… and just like drug abuse that has permeated our society, malnutrition has to be stopped now!” the message said.

In fulfilling its mission of improving the nutrition situation in the country, the National Nutrition Council embarked in the strategy of Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI) with the aim of assessing the effectiveness of local governments in the planning and implementation of nutrition programs from the national down to the local level.

This evaluation culminates with the recognition of LGUs with excellent performance in nutrition program management and implementation as well as delivery of nutrition services to the communities, now known as the National Nutrition Awarding Ceremony.

The awarding ceremony is an annual event carried out by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) to recognize local government units (LGUs) and barangay nutrition scholars (BNSs) who excelled in nutrition in their respective areas. Since 1978, the NNC has been conferring awards, inclusive of trophies and cash prizes, to LGUs and BNSs to applaud their exemplary performance in implementing programs and improving the nutritional status of the people in their communities, particularly infants, children, and mothers.

The notable awards given in the annual NNAC include the Consistent Regional Outstanding Winner in Nutrition Award, Nutrition Honor Award, and the National Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar Award.

ASEAN article photoMANILA, PHILIPPINES – In a collective move to end all forms of malnutrition in the region, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Member States adopted the Leaders’ Declaration on Ending All Forms of Malnutrition during the 31st ASEAN Summit in Manila on 13 November 2017.

The declaration is the highest level of political commitment geared toward a multi-sectoral approach engaging the sectors of agriculture, health, nutrition, social welfare and other stakeholders, all for achieving sustainable food and nutrition security among nations of the region.

In the Chairman’s statement delivered during the 31st ASEAN Summit, Philippine President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, on behalf of the ASEAN Leaders, recognized the critical importance of addressing malnutrition as essential in achieving development.

“We recognize that nutrition is an essential factor to overall health and well-being, thus, contributing to the overall productivity and development of the ASEAN Member States… We look forward to the formulation of the multi-sectoral ASEAN Framework of Action for Nutrition in 2018 as a way forward for implementing the Declaration,” he said.

After thorough review by the NNC Secretariat and Technical Committee of the 142 entries received by the NNC, the chosen theme for this year’s Nutrition Month campaign is “Ugaliing magtanim, Sapat na nutrisyon aanihin!,” an entry sent by Ms. Julie Ann Q. Colipano of Valencia City, Bukidnon.
