 MG 2161The National Nutrition Council (NNC) on 22 February 2018 held a general assembly of the National Evaluation Team (NET) at the NNC Boardroom to jumpstart the annual conduct of the Monitoring of Local Level Plan Implementation or MELLPI. Assistant Secretary of Health and NNC Executive Director Bernie Flores presided over the assembly composed of new and experienced members of the NET. An overview of the programs and projects of the local government units vying for the various award categories were discussed to prepare the teams during the visits. The 21 local government units to be visited this 2018 are vying for the Nutrition Honor Award, the First Year and Second Year Consistent Regional Award on Nutrition (CROWN) Maintenance Award. The team composition for each area to be visited was also discussed during the assembly.

Interview on nutrition information management

The National Nutrition Council represented by Ms. Margarita DC. Enriquez of Nutrition Policy and Planning Division and Ms. Leah M. Felismino of Nutrition Surveillance Division participated in the Regional Nutrition Cluster V meeting on 7 February 2018 with Ms. Janice P. Feliciano of Health Emergency Management Bureau of the Department of Health. The meeting, presided by RD Napoleon Arevalo and NNC Nutrition Program Coordinator Arlene Reario, discussed the ongoing nutrition response activities being conducted by the government and other stakeholders during the Mayon Volcano eruption. Response activities for nutrition include provision of 3 boiled eggs a week to children under five years, and supplementation with vitamin A capsule and multiple micronutrient powder for children 6-23 months; provision of services along infant and young child feeding in emergencies, supplementary feeding and management of acute malnutrition among young children. About 20 registered nutritionist-dietitians were hired and trained to assist in the provision of nutrition services.

TAN PHL-03 Partners meeting was held in partnership with Nutrition International and UNICEF last 12 January 2018 at NNC Board Room. Attendees were NNC Technical Committee members, UN development partners, Office of the Vice President, Office of the Cabinet Secretary, and PLCPD.

Nutrition International (formerly Micronutrient Initiative) continues its support to the Philippines for the implementation of Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) 2017-2022 by engaging the services of Alcanz International Limited Liability Company (LLC). The terms of reference of Alcanz International LLC is along supporting and strengthening the capacity of NNC to operationalize PPAN 2017-2022 and advance the national nutrition agenda in the Philippines using strengthened multi-sectoral and multi-stakeholder platforms. Activities will be along the development of a compendium of success stories and lessons learned from the implementation of effective nutrition actions by LGUs awarded for outstanding nutrition performance; strengthening the monitoring and evaluation system for PPAN; strategy for LGU mobilization for nutritional outcomes; formulation of regional plan of actions for nutrition (RPAN); and strengthening the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) multi-sectoral platform. The technical assistance will be jointly funded by NI, NNC, and UNICEF.

The NNC convened a meeting with members of the NNC Technical Committee, representatives from UN agencies (FAO, UNICEF, WFP, WHO), non-government organizations (NGOs), and other partners in implementing nutrition interventions last 12 January 2018 to present an overview of the support to PPAN 2017-2022 implementation.
