Breastfeeding is the gold standard in infant feeding. All mothers are encouraged to practice breastfeeding TSEK to ensure that the baby gets the proper nutrition during the first 1000 days which is the critical period of growth and development.
Breastfeeding TSEK means:
- “Tama” - immediate skin-to-skin contact between mother and baby after birth, and initiation of breastfeeding within the first hour of life.
- “Sapat” – the mother need not worry if she is not producing much milk during the first few days after the child’s birth. Little breastmilk is enough for the first week and frequent breastfeeding ensures continuous breastmilk supply to respond to the increasing needs of the baby.
- “EKsklusibo” - giving only breastmilk and no other liquid to the baby for the first six months. Breastmilk has all the water and nutrients that the baby needs for the first six (6) months after which the baby should be given appropriate complementary foods while continuing breastfeeding.

Eating healthy does not have to be expensive. This was proven by the Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) of Metro Manila who demonstrated how to cook their healthy ulam of the day via their video entries to the Healthy UOTD Cooking Contest of the National Nutrition Council-NCR.
During this pandemic when many households do not have enough money to buy food, cooking healthy meals for the family is really a challenge. This is the reason why during the start of the pandemic in 2020, the National Nutrition Council-NCR encouraged the Barangay Nutrition Scholars in Metro Manila to share their ‘ulam’/dish recipes that are easy to prepare, low-cost, and healthy. The BNSs shared recipes that mothers can prepare even with a limited budget – ulam na hindi lang mura pero masarap, masustansya, at madaling lutuin.

The first 1000 days consists of three (3) essential phases: 270 days of conception and pregnancy; 180 days of the child from birth until age 6 months, and the remaining 550 days from the child’s 6th month to his/her 2nd birthday. Good nutrition during the child’s first 1000 days is imperative as it sets the foundation for the child’s over all health and nutrition, and future.
The child’s brain develops fastest during pregnancy requiring optimum nutrition. As the child is dependent on maternal nutrition, the pregnant mother needs to be well-nourished. Thus, the first step in ensuring that the child receives good nutrition for growth and development during the first 270 days is by taking care of the health and nutritional needs of the pregnant mother. Kaya mahalaga na alagaan ang buntis.
In the 2019 Expanded National Nutrition Survey (ENNS), 22.9% of pregnant women were found to be nutritionally at-risk and there were more teenage pregnant mothers (28.5%) who were nutritionally at-risk than adult pregnant women (22.3%). Anemia among pregnant women is considered a mild public health problem at 19.9% based on the same survey. Being underweight or nutritionally at-risk and anemic during pregnancy pose health risks to the mother and more so, to the growing fetus in her womb. The mother must maintain a healthy weight during pregnancy and get the proper amount of essential nutrients for her and the child in her womb. In fact, a woman must have normal weight even before becoming pregnant to give birth to a healthy infant with birth weight of not less than 2.5 kilograms.
