28 February 2014, Mandaluyong City - The National Nutrition Council-NCR conducted a Program Implementation Review (PIR) of the 2013 Local Level Implementation of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN). The one-day activity was attended by the local nutrition program coordinators of all the local government units in Metro Manila except the cities of Las Pi?as and Malabon. Also present were the members of the Regional Management Group (RMG) which serves as the technical arm of the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC). The activity was held at the Amphitheater of the DOH Center for Health Development-NCR.
The PIR aims to assess whether local nutrition programs, projects and activities were planned and undertaken, targets were reached, expected outcomes were realized and resources were utilized efficiently. Prior to the regional PIR, all the local nutrition committees (LNCs) were requested to do their own review of how they planned and implemented their local nutrition programs in 2013. The results of the local PIR were then used as reference by the participants during the workshop.

8 February 2014 (Mandaluyong City) - “All of my four children were breastfed. I know very well the benefits of breastfeeding”, Congresswomen Leah S. Paquiz said in her message during the Breastfeeding Forum and Photo Exhibit held at the Kaban ng Hiyas in Mandaluyong City. Congresswoman Paquiz, Sectoral Representative of Ang Nars Party-list, supports the promotion of breastfeeding and firmly believes in the many benefits of breastfeeding.
Around 300 participants attended the event composed of Infant and Young ChildFeeding(IYCF) coordinators, breastfeeding support groups, medical nutrition program coordinators, nutritionists-dietitians, barangay nutrition scholars, andbarangay health workersfrom the 17 local government units in Metro Manila. Also present were the members of the Regional Nutrition Management Group that serves as the technical working group of the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC).
All the 17 LGUs were given a certificate of appreciation for protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding as an effective intervention against hunger and malnutrition. The certificates were presented by NNC-NCR Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Milagros Elisa V. Federizo and Congresswoman Paquiz.
Atty. Jennifer C. Ong from a non-profit organization L.A.T.C.H (Lactation, Attachment, Training, Counseling, Help) discussed how the participants can uphold the Milk Code (E.O. 51) in the barangays. Nutritionist-Dietitians Erlinda F. Iba?ez and Josie Clemens C. Francisco of Quezon City and Pasig City respectively, shared their experienceson Infant Feeding in Emergencies (IFE).
Also present in the event were PopCom–NCR Regional Director and RNC Vice-Chair Lolito Tacardon and Ms. Beth Dumaran of the Center for Health Development-NCR. Both gave a message of support to the promotion of breastfeeding.
One of the highlights of the event was the photo exhibit on the good practices of the LGUs on IYCF. This event is part of NNC-NCR’s local media campaign, specifically the promotion of good nutrition.

January 30, 2014 - As part of its series of advocacy fora on the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos, the National Nutrition Council-NCR convened over three hundred Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) from all over Metro Manila for the Advocacy Forum on Marketing the NGF. The forum was held on January 30, 2014 at the King and Queen Hall of the Makati Palace Hotel.
The advocacy forum was intended to disseminate the revised nutritional guidelines among the BNSs and to equip them with adequate knowledge and skills to help them in the promotion of NGF in their community.
Each guideline was discussed by NPC Milagros Elisa V. Federizo by showing related video clips from the TV show “Busog Lusog” of NNC which was aired over ABS-CBN Channel 2 a few years ago. NNC-NCR also invited Ms. Vivien Mangalindan, a broadcaster and community strategist, to help the BNSs in marketing the NGF. In her talk entitled “High Impact Communication Skills for BNSs”, Ms. Mangalindan discussed points on how to effectively present the guidelines and encourage community members to promote and practice the nutritional guidelines.
The BNSs signed on the pledge of commitment wall to declare their support in the region-wide NGF promotion by disseminating these messages among the people in their communities and by practicing them as well.
Through its series of advocacy fora with different stakeholders, NNC-NCR hopes to gather more support in promoting the NGF throughout the region.

6 February 2014 – The National Nutrition Council at the National Capital Region has announced the schedule of the annual Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI) during the meeting of the Association of the City/District Nutrition Program Coordinators of Metro Manila held at the Amphitheater of the DOH-Center for Health Development-NCR in Mandaluyong City. The MELLPI is conducted yearly by the inter-agency Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET). This year's Chair of the RNET is Ms. Lorna Cruz of the DILG-NCR with Ms. Marlene Viray-Navarro of Grace Family Helper Project as Co-Chair.
The MELLPI is a system established by NNC in 1978 for monitoring & evaluating the local level plan implementation. It aims to assess the efficiency and effectiveness of local governments in planning and implementing local nutrition programs. The RNET will conduct the MELLPI in the 17 LGUs in NCR from March to April of this year to assess the local PPAN implementation in 2013. The 17 LGUs were informed of the specific date of the MELLPI visit in their area.
Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Milagros Elisa V. Federizo during the meeting underscored the importance of the MELLPI as a strategy in strengthening the local nutrition programs as it allows the local nutrition committees (LNCs) to identify areas for improvement based on the results of the MELLPI. The MELLPI also serves as an opportunity for mentoring the LNCs and in advocating for continuing support to the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition.
The local nutrition program coordinators led by the Association President Eileen S. Guevara expressed support and cooperation in the forthcoming MELLPI.

The NCR Nutrition Communication Resource Group or NCR held its first meeting for 2014 on January 8 at the Robbinsdale Hotel, Quezon City to map up its activities for the year. The NCR2 is the regional nutrition media group that works in partnership with the National Nutrition Council-NCR in intensifying nutrition advocacy and promotion in Metro Manila.
During the meeting, the group reviewed and assessed their 2013 accomplishments. Among the accomplishments of the group are the formulation of the local media plan, participation in the crafting of the Communication Plan for the promotion of the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF), involvement in various nutrition advocacy and special events of NNC-NCR which were covered by the media, and publication of nutrition articles in leading newspapers.
This year, the group will focus on informing the public about nutrition in emergencies (NiE) which is the focus of the 2014 Nutrition Month and to intensify the promotion of the NGF in Metro Manila using various strategies.
