The National Nutrition Council – NCR and various stakeholders in Metro Manila pledged their commitment to support the fight against the growing problem of overweight and obesity in the country during the Stakeholders’ Forum held on 28 July 2015 at the Bayview Park Hotel, Manila.

At the forum, stakeholders from the academe, non-government organizations, national government agencies and local government units recognized that the problem of overweight and obesity in the country has continued to escalate through the years and has now become a nutrition emergency that needs to be addressed.   

dewormingThe National Nutrition Council – NCR joined the “Oplan Goodbye Bulate” nationwide campaign launch during the National School Deworming Day held on 29 July 2015 at the Mandaluyong Elementary School, Mandaluyong City as part of the Department of Health’s HI5 campaign.

Around 500 pupils from Grades 1 – 6 were given chewable deworming tablets and another round will be done in January 2016 wherein the second dose will be given to elementary pupils as well as high school students.

ncr supports doh hi5 smThe National Nutrition Council (NNC-NCR) joined the Department of Health-NCR Office and the stakeholders from the 17 local government units (LGUs) in Metro Manila, non-government organizations, and government agencies in the Universal Health Care High Impact Five (Hi5) Summit held on June 8, 2015 at the Century Park Hotel, Manila.

The 15-month High Impact Five Breakthrough or Hi5 is a strategy of the Department of Health (DOH) that aims to address the various elements of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) 4, 5 and 6. As explained by DOH Assistant Secretary Elmer G. Punzalan, these strategies focus on the five (5) critical universal health care interventions with high impact on health: maternal care, infant care, child care (under five health), HIV/AIDs, and service delivery network (SDN).

Dr. Ruben Siapno of DOH-NCRO presented a road map that shows the health and nutrition services that will be strengthened and intensified through the Hi5 campaign during the 15-month implementation period. There will be Buntis Congress, milk letting activity, hospital week celebration, mass deworming, Kalusugang Pangkalahatan (KP) caravan, micronutrient supplementation, youth summit, world AIDS day celebration,, blood donation and nourishment feeding. All these activities will be synchronized in all the cities and municipality in the region to create impact.

ngo forumNGO partners in Metro Manila expressed their intent to scale up nutrition action in the region during the 2nd Regional NGO Forum entitled “Strengthening GO-NGO Partnerships in Metro Manila” held on July 30, 2015 at the Berjaya Hotel, Makati City.

Twelve (12) NGOs and five (5) member agencies of the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) attended the forum. Five new NGO partners from Muntinlupa Development Foundation, Odyssey Foundation, Child Fund, Ina Foundation and Letnuk Foundation were able to join the forum.

ncr conducts npm training2The National Nutrition Council-NCR conducted another batch of Nutrition Program Management (NPM) Training at the Makati Palace Hotel, Makati City on June 1-5, 2015. Thirty (30) local nutrition workers composed of city nutrition program coordinators, members of city nutrition committees and selected barangay nutrition scholars from the cities of Taguig, Muntinlupa, Manila, Pasig, Mandaluyong, Parañaque, Caloocan, Malabon, Marikina, Las Piñas, Quezon, and San Juan, and the Municipality of Pateros attended and completed the 5-day live-in training.

The training was facilitated by Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Milagros Elisa V. Federizo, Ms. Ana Ordenes (Nutritionist-Dietitian III of Muntinlupa City), Ms. Femilina Tuazon (ND III from Makati City), and Ms. Marlene Navarro (Program Manager of Grace Family Helper Project and member of the Regional Management Group). Other resource speakers were Nutrition Officer III Emerenciana L. Francia and NO II Theresa A. Rivas while Nutrition Officer I Mary Agnes Beatrice R. Menorca acted both as training secretariat and participant.

ncr buntis congress 2015 smThe DOH-NCR Office spearheaded the conduct of a simultaneous regionwide “Buntis Congress” on June 24, 2015. All LGUs in Metro Manila except for the cities of San Juan, Manila and Las Piñas, participated in the event.

The Buntis Congress is part of the 15-month High Impact Five Breakthrough Strategies or commonly known as Hi5 of the Department of Health which aims to accelerate reduction in maternal deaths, infant and under-five mortality; halt HIV/AIDS; and strengthen Service Delivery Networks.

In support of the Hi5, the National Nutrition Council-NCR participated in the Buntis Congress conducted by Taguig City Nutrition Office in cooperation with the Department of Health – NCR Office, United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Research Triangle Institute (RTI) and Philhealth. More than 300 pregnant mothers attended the congress held at the Taguig City University (TCU) Auditorium.

To promote good nutrition among the pregnant mothers, NNC-NCR distributed flyers on 10 Kumainments, Nutri-Komiks on Breastfeeding and recipe book on “Mga Lutuing Gulay Araw-Arawin – Simple, Mura at Masustansya”. Nutrition Officer I Bea Menorca gave a lecture on proper nutrition during and after pregnancy. An audio-visual presentation on the 10 Kumainments was also shown after the nutrition lecture.
