jpegThe Association of Nutrition Action Officers (ANAO) of NCR had its second meeting for the year last March 14, 2012 at the Conference Room of the Mayor’s Office at the Pateros Municipal Hall. The meeting was hosted by the municipality’s NAO and wife of the Mayor, Dr. Mary Joyce Flores-Medina, who is also the Vice-President of the Association.

The Association led by its President, CNAO Carmelita “Menchie” A. Abalos, discussed plans for the celebration of this year’s nutrition month celebration with the theme, “Pagkain ng gulay ugaliin, araw-araw itong ihain!”. The theme emphasizes the importance of eating vegetables everyday for good health and nutrition. The group agreed to have an “Advocacy Run” on the first weekend of July to be participated in by about 5,000 runners from the 17 cities and municipality. The said event will also serve as the kick-off for the NM celebration in the region. The Advocacy Run aims to create greater awareness on the importance of eating vegetables and generate funds for the Association for its nutrition projects.

BF stationIn line with the celebration of Womens’ Month, the Local Government of Quezon City through the Office of the Vice Mayor launched its very first breastfeeding station located at the Inner Ground floor of Legislative Building, Quezon City Hall on 13 March 2012.

The ribbon-cutting and posting of the “Breastfeeding Welcome Here” Decal was led by Mayor Herbert Bautista and Vice Mayor Joy Belmonte together with DOH Representative Usec. Teodoro Herbosa, NNC-NCR RNPC Milagros Elisa Federizo, QC Nutrition Action Officer Dr. Antonieta Inumerable, City Councilors Doray Delarmente, Aly Medalla and Francisco Calalay.

The breastfeeding station is adequately provided with refrigerator, lavatory, television, air-conditioning unit, couch and IEC materials that make the breastfeeding station a comfortable and clean place for clients and city hall female employees who are breastfeeding.

The QC nutritionists led by Ms. Marivic Perlada and trained breastfeeding peer counselors will conduct Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) lectures for mothers every month at the breastfeeding station.

OATHpic editThe officers and board members of the Association of Nutrition Action Officers of NCR (ANAO-NCR) had its oath taking ceremony last February 15, 2012 held at the Paris Hall, New Horizon Hotel hosted by the National Nutrition Council at the National Capital Region. Nine officers and board members from different LGUs were able to take their oath officiated by the inducting officer, Dr. Eduardo C. Janairo, the Regional Director of Center for Health Development-Metro Manila and the Chair of the Regional Nutrition Committee of NCR.

It was in 2010 when NNC-NCR took the initiative in organizing the NAOs in Metro Manila by convening all the NAOs in a meeting for an election. Mrs. Carmelita “Menchie” A. Abalos won the election and became the President of the Association. The Metro Manila NAOs officially named their organization as Association of Nutrition Action Officers of NCR or ANAO-NCR with the mission of “creating efficient and effective nutrition action officers in the implementation of the nutrition programs towards the improvement of the nutrition situation in Metro Manila”.

After the oath taking ceremony, a short meeting was held wherein the Association finalized and approved its Constitution and By-laws and brainstormed on their activities for the nutrition month as well as their fund raising activity. Further discussion regarding the plans and activities of the Association for 2012 will be done in their next meeting at Pateros, Metro Manila to be hosted by its Vice President, Dr. Mary Joyce F. Medina.

ND of the yearMs. Milagros Elisa V. Federizo, the Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator (RNPC) of the National Capital Region, was the recipient of the “Nutritionist-Dietitian of the Year” Award conferred by the Nutritionist-Dietitians’ Association of the Philippines (NDAP) during the 57th Annual Convention held last March 1-2 at the Waterfront Hotel in Lahug, Cebu City. NDAP is the accredited professional organization for Nutritionist-Dietitians by the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC).

As indicated in the plaque of recognition awarded to RNPC Federizo, she was chosen to be the ND of the Year “for her utmost competence as a nutritionist-dietitian in public health showing the positive impact of nutrition in local governance; her scholarship, creativity and productivity at work, continuing education activities, support and services to NDAP and other organizations, exemplary public service and professional accomplishments that earned various awards, citations and recognition has merited a fitting tribute from her peers and colleagues”.

DSC 0071Mandaluyong, the "Tiger City" and the second smallest city in the Philippines, commemorated its 67th Liberation Day and its 18th Cityhood Anniversary through a 12-day celebration from January 29 to February 9, 2012.

It was a celebration of thanksgiving for the city's continuous success and progress as evidenced by the many achievements and accolades received by the City in the past years. Considered as one of their outstanding achievements is the "2010 Green Banner Award" in recognition of their outstanding nutrition program management and implementation which was awarded by the National Nutrition Council at the National Capital Region during the 2011 Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony (RNAC) held at the Isla Ballroom of EDSA Shangri-La Hotel on August 18, 2011. Mandaluyong was also the Presidential Awardee for being the "Most Child-Friendly City" (Highly Urbanized City category) in 2011 awarded by the Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC).

The 12-day celebration commenced with a Nutri-Fun Run last January 29, 2012, followed by a medical mission dubbed "Operation We Care" and a night of thanksgiving, "Gabi ng Pasasalamat"- Bantay Bata Night. Other highlights of the celebration included a job fair for local and overseas employment; employees night; the "Koro ng Bayan: 2nd Choir Championship"; awarding of the "Ulirang Mandaleño"; recognition of the Top 10 Taxpayers of Mandaluyong; and the inaugural blessing of a multipurpose hall, police community precinct 6, Hagdang Bato Itaas Barangay Hall, Mandaluyong Public Market, Fabella Road and Day Care Centers. The celebration culminated last February 9 with a Liberation Parade participated by employees, students, and other citizens of Mandaluyong.

Janairo, the Chair of Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) and the Director of Center for Health Development-Metro Manila (CHD-MM), presented the proposed Metro Manila's nutrition program for 2012 in the RNC meeting held last February 17 at the Conference Room of CHD-MM, Mandaluyong City. Twelve agencies were represented during the meeting namely, PopCom-NCR; DA-Region IV; NSO-NCR; Hope for the Youth Foundation, Inc; Grace Family Helper Project; DepEd-NCR; TESDA-NCR; MMDA; PIA-NCR; DILG; CHD-MM and NNC-NCR.

Director Janairo's proposed activities on nutrition focuses on the following: (1) breastfeeding network and ensuring continuum of service; (2) community-based feeding program for street children and mother's classes for families included in the list based on the National Household Targeting System (NHTS); (3) putting up of Sangkap Pinoy posters in markets, grocery stores to promote fortified food products and staples; (4) fastfood establishments and restaurants to indicate the calorie content of their meals; (5) teaching people how to compute their caloric requirement and calories in foods; (6) making people conscious of their Body Mass Index (BMI); and (7) a research on cellular nutrition for senior citizens. Dir. Janairo emphasized the need to make “good eating behavior” and healthy lifestyle a “craze” or the “in” thing in Metro Manila.
