NCR eating healthyKeeping a healthy weight during the holidays is quite a challenge. Parties and holiday get-togethers have become a tradition as we celebrate Christmas and the New Year with family and friends. So how can we eat healthy during the holidays? According to the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, we can still make the holiday season healthful by following these simple steps:

  1. Make realistic goals. The holiday season is not the time to place added stress on yourself by attempting to lose weight.
  2. Use smaller plates if available when at a buffet-style party.
  3. Try eating a healthy snack before going to a party to ease your hunger.
  4. Conversation is calorie-free, but move away from the buffet so you won't be tempted to eat while you talk.
  5. Scope out the buffet before you go up to make your selections.
  6. Balance what you eat at parties with what you eat during the day.
  7. Remember that beverages contain calories as well. Alcoholic beverages, home-made punches, and chocolaty beverages tend to have sneaky calories that you may not bargain for. Consume these in moderation!
  8. Watch your portion sizes and take small "tastes" of high calorie dishes.

Remember, healthy eating is important if we want to achieve and maintain a healthy weight. Enjoy the holidays without the guilt of having extra calories and gaining extra pounds. Happy New Year!

NCR RNCMtg Jan201410 January 2014, Mandaluyong City - In a joint meeting of the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) and the Regional Management Group (RMG) of NCR held at the Conference Room of the DOH-NCR in Mandaluyong City, the RNC identified the priority areas for its Shepherding Project in 2014. The Shepherding Project of the RNC aims to assist the LGUs in improving their nutrition program management (NPM) by mentoring and providing them technical assistance.

The RMG members together with the official and technical staff of the National Nutrition Council-NCR conduct frequent monitoring visits in the priority LGUs to mentor and assist them in improving their planning and implementation of their local nutrition program. The priority areas for the project since 2012 were Navotas City and the Municipality of Pateros. Considerable improvements were observed in the nutrition program management of these LGUs based on the results of the monitoring and evaluation done by the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET) in 2013. This year, the project will also cover the City of Parañaque which has expressed interest in improving further their nutrition program.

IEC materials promoting good nutrition, particularly the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos were also provided.

Starting this March, the teams will be visiting their barangays to interview breastfeeding counselors about their counseling experience. NCR NiE StakeholdersForumEmergencies and disasters do happen. But we can prevent, if not minimize, the losses of limbs, lives and properties brought by disasters if we are better prepared.

It is essential for the general public to realize the importance of preparedness during emergencies. Thus, the National Nutrition Council-NCR in support of the 40th Nutrition Month celebration conducted a Stakeholders’ Forum on Nutrition in Emergencies on July 23, 2014 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Quezon City. Attended by close to 500 participants from all over Metro Manila, the forum served as an opportune time to create awareness on and elicit support for Nutrition in Emergencies among the various stakeholders in the region.

At the forum, RNPC Milagros Elisa Federizo stressed that, “As health and nutrition workers, public servants and those who have a stake in the well-being of our communities, we should - more than anyone else, be prepared and ready to respond accordingly during emergencies and disasters to protect the health and nutritional well-being of those affected by calamities or disasters”. On the other hand, DOH-NCRO Assistant Regional Director Ruben Siapno emphasized the proper way of serving – to serve with a smile and positivity. Responders cannot afford to breakdown and wallow in the difficulties brought by the disaster.
