NCRNMLaunchSan Juan City hosts the launching ceremony of the Nutrition Month celebration on July 1 morning.

A program started the celebration which was attended by the newly-elected officials of the city led by Mayor Guia Gomez and Vice Mayor Francis Zamora.

Also in attendance were the members of the Regional Nutrition Management Group of the National Capital Region (RNMG-NCR), National Nutrition Council-NCR, representatives of Association of City/District Nutrition Program Coordinators of Metro Manila, Regional Federation of Barangay Nutrition Scholars, San Juan Barangay Captains, Day Care pupils and city hall employees.

In her speech, Mayor Gomez assured the San Juaniños of working hard on her next three- year term and prioritizing the nutrition program of the city.

NCRNutSpeakersBureauThe Regional Nutrition Speakers Bureau of NCR was convened by the National Nutrition Council-NCR for an orientation on the theme of this year’s Nutrition Month (NM) Celebration. The event was held on July 10, 2013 at the Amphitheater of the Center for Health Development-NCR in Mandaluyong City. The orientation aims to prepare them to be resource persons on the NM theme, “Gutom at Malnutrisyon, sama-sama nating wakasan!’

The NNC-NCR organized the Regional Nutrition Speakers Bureau in 2012 as part of its local media plan. The speakers bureau is a pool of resource persons on nutrition and serves as the information dissemination arm of NNC-NCR. It is composed of selected nutritionist-dietitians namely, Beth Angat (Pasay), Carlota Go (Makati), Eileen Guevara (Marikina), Ana Ordenes (Muntinlupa), Eden Azarcon (San Juan), Edna Cipriano (Navotas), Tess Abando (Caloocan), and Marissa Almario (Pasig).

NCR Nutrition Program Coordinator Milagros Elisa V. Federizo discussed thoroughly the NM theme and familiarized the group on the PowerPoint presentation prepared by NNC. She also threw in some tips on how to make a good presentation. The members of the Nutrition Speakers Bureau reiterated their commitment to actively promote good nutrition to help prevent hunger and malnutrition.

CEU NutMonthPledge11 July 2013, CEU Manila - Hundreds of students and some faculty members of the School of Nutrition and Hospitality Management of Centro Escolar University in Mendiola, Manila pledged their support to end hunger and malnutrition during a program held as part of the University’s Nutrition Month celebration. The program, spearheaded by the student organization PAN Delta Chapter, focused on hunger mitigation and nutrition labeling with NNC-NCR Nutrition Program Coordinator Milagros Elisa V. Federizo and FNRI Science Research Specialist II Rosemarie Dumag as resource persons, respectively. A Nutrition Quiz Bee was also held during the program to test the students’ awareness and knowledge on hunger issues and actions to mitigate hunger and malnutrition.

The students and faculty members also participated in the Food and Photo Exhibit, Nutri-Jingle Competition, and Nutri-Amazing Race that focused on the 2012 Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF). These activities were conducted to raise the awareness of the students and teachers on the theme of this year’s Nutrition Month Celebration, “Gutom at Malnutrisyon, sama-sama nating wakasan!”, and get their support to help end hunger and malnutrition in the country.

The Regional Nutrition Committee of NCR had its second meeting for the year on July 9 at the Conference Room of DOH Center for Health Development-NCR in Mandaluyong City. RNC Vice-Chair and POPCOM-NCR OIC Regional Director Eleanor M. Cura presided the meeting, assisted by RNPC Milagros Elisa V. Federizo.

Fifteen (15) member agencies were represented at the meeting, namely: DOH CHD-NCR, POPCOM-NCR, NSO-NCR, DILG-NCR, DSWD-NCR, DEPED-NCR, MMDA, PIA-NCR, Nutrition Foundation of the Philippines, Grace Family Helper Project, Save the Children, GMA Kapuso Foundation, Nutrition Center of the Philippines, Hope for the Youth Foundation and the National Nutrition Council-NCR which serves as the Secretariat of the RNC.

Three (3) RNC resolutions were approved during the meeting, namely: 1) Enjoining all LGUs to strengthen their BNS Program by deploying and providing incentives, training, mentoring and supervision to all BNSs; 2) Enjoining all LGUs to adopt and comply with the NNC GB Policy on Nutrition in Emergencies and to organize a Nutrition Cluster; and 3) Enjoining all LGUs to purchase adequate supply of Iron Supplements and intensify activities for the control and prevention of Iron Deficiency Anemia.


The RNC also discussed the results of the 2013 Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI) and the Search for the 2012 Regional Outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholar (ROBNS); organization of the regional and local Bantay Asin Task Forces in support of the ASIN Law and the prevention and control of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD); promotion of the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF); capability building activities lined-up for the year; and the regional Nutrition Month activities. Several agencies shared their activities in support of the 39th Nutrition Month celebration.


The 2nd meeting of the RNC proved to be fruitful and productive as there were several resolutions passed, important matters were discussed and action lines were agreed upon.

MMDA NMForum15 July 2013, MMDA, Makati City – In support of the 39th Nutrition Month, the Staff Development Division of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) conducted a Forum on Healthy Diet and Good Nutrition which was attended by around 50 employees. The forum aimed to increase the understanding of the employees on the importance of healthy eating and good nutrition and what they can do to help mitigate hunger and malnutrition.

NNC-NCR Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator Milagros Elisa V. Federizo was the guest speaker at the forum. She discussed the theme of this year’s NM celebration, “Gutom at Malnutrisyon, sama-sama nating wakasan!”, healthy eating for a healthy weight, and how to prevent non-communicable diseases by having a healthy lifestyle. After the nutrition lecture, the participants pledged their commitment and support to help end hunger and malnutrition. An interactive session was also held wherein the participants were given the opportunity to share their insights, ask questions and be clarified on issues concerning nutrition, hunger and healthy lifestyle.

NCRBNSForumJuly12As part of the 39th Nutrition Month celebration in the region, the National Nutrition Council-NCR together with the Nutritionist-Dietitians’ Association of the Philippines (NDAP) conducted a Nutrition Forum for Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) focusing on the theme of the 39th Nutrition Month, “Gutom at malnutrisyon, sama-sama nating wakasan!”. The forum was held at the Valenzuela City Social Hall on July 12, 2013 and was attended by 180 BNSs from all over Metro Manila and some members of the Regional Nutrition Committee. Two main topics were discussed at the forum, namely “BNSs Kontra Obesity” and “BNSs Laban sa Gutom”.

The increasing percentage of children and adults who are overweight or obese is now a challenging problem in Metro Manila. There is a need for the BNSs to have a clear understanding on how to fight this form of malnutrition. NDAP Speaker Ms. Maria Bernadette G. Platon, Associate Dietitian of University of Sto. Tomas Hospital and Vice-President of the Philippine Association of Diabetes Educators (PADE), discussed how to assess if a person is overweight or obese, the consequences of overweight and obesity and how this form of malnutrition can be controlled, managed and prevented. Ms. Mary Grace P. Tamayo, BNS of Mandaluyong City and Treasurer of the Federation of BNSs in NCR, Inc. shared their city’s efforts in promoting healthy lifestyle to fight overweight and obesity.
