25 July 2013, San Juan City - Ms. Ner Chelene G. Babaran of the School of Nutrition and Hospitality Management (SNHM) of Centro Escolar University - Manila won the Grand Prize during the Veggie Cooking Contest “Go na Go sa Gulay!” conducted by the National Nutrition Council-NCR in partnership with the Nutritionist-Dietitians’ Association of the Philippines, Inc. (NDAP). The cooking contest participated in by BS Nutrition and Dietetics students was held at the San Juan Gymnasium in San Juan City as part of the 39th Nutrition Month celebration in the region.
Ms. Babaran's veggie dish, “Tokwa’t Saluyot sa Gata”, won over the recipe entries from the other universities that joined the contest namely, Emilio Aguinaldo College, Our Lady of Fatima University – Valenzuela, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, St. Scholastica’s College – Manila and University of the East – Manila. Ms. Babaran’s coach/trainer is Professor Lindsay J. Alvarez.

26 July 2013, Mandaluyong City - Thirteen (13) grades 5 and 6 elementary students from the different cities and municipality in Metro Manila competed in this year’s Regional On-the-Spot Poster Making Contest. The contest was held at the Amphitheater of the Center for Health Development – NCR in Mandaluyong City on July 26, 2013 as part of the 39th Nutrition Month Celebration. Participants were asked to interpret through their artworks the NM theme, “Gutom at malnutrisyon, sama-sama nating wakasan!”.
Mr. Merlin M. Gabriel of the National Nutrition Council-Central Office, Mr. Demetrio C. Magno of the CHD-NCR, and Ms. Angielica L. Reambillo of the Nutrition Foundation of the Philippines composed the board of judges. The posters were judged based on symbolism (40%); visual impact (35%); and originality (25%).
Mr. Chester Aguirre of San Agustin, Elementary School in Parañaque City won the Grand Prize while Mr. Ronjay-C Mendiola of Pateros Elementary School in the Municipality of Pateros and Ms. Jewel C. Gripon of Tangos Elementary School in Navotas City were the first and second runner up winners, respectively. They will receive their plaque and cash prize during the Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony on August 29, 2013.

As an initial step in the region-wide promotion of the NGF in Metro Manila, the National Nutrition Council-NCR conducted a Workshop on the Formulation of Communication Plan for the Promotion of the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos (NGF) in NCR on August 7-8, 2013 at Tagaytay Country Hotel in Tagaytay City.
The NGF consists of ten (10) messages which are primary recommendations to promote good health through proper nutrition. They are simple statements that give advice on the consumption of foods and food components for which there are public health concerns. The promotion of the NGF is an important strategy in improving the dietary and related health practices of Filipinos toward improved nutritional condition.

30 July 2013, Mandaluyong City - Metro Manila Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) proved that they are not just ordinary community nutrition workers. They can sing, dance, entertain and educate people through music. Last July 30, 2013, BNSs from the cities of Taguig, Valenzuela, Marikina, Makati, San Juan, Las Piñas, Manila, and Mandaluyong and the municipality of Pateros competed in the “Himig at Indak para sa Wastong Nutrisyon”, a Nutri-Jingle Singing Contest conducted by the National Nutrition Council-NCR as part of the 39th Nutrition Month celebration. The competition was held at Kaban ng Hiyas in Mandaluyong City.
Each group of BNSs composed of not more than 10 members gave their best shot as they performed and interpreted the NM theme, “Gutom at malnutrisyon, sama-sama nating wakasan!” through their nutri-jingle. Ms. Alona Estanilla-Teo of the NNC Nutrition Surveillance Division, Mr. Roman Miguel Javier and Mr. Richmond Montilla, both taking up Bachelor of Music in UP Diliman-College of Music and members of internationally acclaimed choir, composed the Board of Judges.

The National Nutrition Council – National Capital Region of the Department of Health had its 2013 Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony (RNAC) at the Manila Hotel on 29 August 2013 to recognize the outstanding local government units (LGUs) and Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) in Metro Manila for their exemplary performance in nutrition program management and service delivery in 2012.
Outstanding LGUs in Metro Manila and BNSs were determined by the inter-agency Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET) based on the results of the Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI) and BNS Evaluation conducted earlier this year.

The officers and members of the Association of Nutrition Action Officers in NCR (ANAO-NCR, Inc.) reiterated their commitment to support initiatives to end hunger and malnutrition by signing the Declaration to End Hunger and Malnutrition during the Association’s regular meeting held on July 29, 2013 at Max’s Restaurant in Mandaluyong City hosted by ANAO-NCR President Mrs. Carmelita “Menchie” A. Abalos. By signing the Declaration, the officers and members of ANAO-NCR affirmed their commitment to work together to scale up nutrition and nutrition-sensitive interventions in their respective localities to help mitigate hunger and malnutrition.
