City/District Nutrition Program Coordinators (C/DNPCs) of Metro Manila pledged their support to the promotion of good nutrition during the First 1,000 days of life during the C/DNPC General Assembly held on 12 January 2016 at the New City Hall, San Juan City. The assembly was presided by the Regional Nutrition Program Coordinator of the National Nutrition Council – NCR (NNC-NCR) Ms. Milagros Elisa V. Federizo.
The meeting was well-attended with all the cities and municipality in Metro Manila represented except for the City of Manila. Almost 90 C/DNPCs attended the event.
One of the topics discussed during the assembly was the results of the Operation Timbang (OPT) Plus conducted in 2015 in all the 17 cities and municipality in Metro Manila. The OPT Plus is an annual massive weighing of children aged 0-71 months which primarily aims to locate and identify malnourished children and use the results as basis for planning appropriate nutrition programs and projects.

The Food and Nutrition Security – Early Warning System (FNS-EWS) is a project developed by the National Nutrition Council (NNC), in partnership with Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, which serves as a tool and process for the LGU to identify existing, emerging or impending problems related to food insecurity at the same time analyze the causes and plan together for appropriate responses.
As part of the expansion of the FNS-EWS project in the country, Navotas City is the identified pilot area in Metro Manila. This will be the first time that the FNS-EWS is applied in an urban setting. As an initial activity, a 2-day consultative workshop was conducted on October 22-23, 2015 attended by members of the city nutrition committee and other stakeholders led by City Nutrition Action Officer Councilor Reynaldo Monroy on behalf of CNC Chair Mayor John Rey Tiangco.

The Population Commission – NCR (Popcom-NCR) in coordination with the Department of Education – NCR (DepEd-NCR) held its Annual Regional Population Quiz and On-the-Spot Skills Exhibition with the theme “Dignity and Protection of Vulnerable Populations in Emergencies” on November 5, 2015 at the Eurotel, North EDSA, Quezon City.
The Regional PopQuiz and On-the-Spot Skills Exhibition Contests are advocacy strategies of Popcom and DepEd. The contests aim to increase awareness and consciousness of the young people particularly the in-school-youth on population and development concepts and issues and reproductive health concerns that affect their lives and society they belong to.
Several high school students from the sixteen (16) Schools Division Offices (SDO) in NCR participated in various contests such as essay writing, jingle making, poster making and Popquiz contests.
Nutrition Officer I Bea Menorca of NNC-NCR acted as one of the judges in the on-the-spot poster making contest, together with representatives from DSWD and DOST. Mr. Jestoni A. The right health and nutrition in the first 1,000 days of life builds the foundation for a child’s ability to grow, learn and earn in the future. Thus, it has been called the “window of opportunity” for a comprehensive package of nutrition and related interventions to achieve significant changes in reduction in child stunting, underweight and wasting, at the same time contribute to complete child development.
This year, the Federation of Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) of NCR Inc, in partnership with the National Nutrition Council of the National Capital Region (NNC-NCR), focuses on the First 1,000 days during the 29th Annual BNS Regional Conference conducted on November 10, 2015 at the Greenhills Elan Hotel Modern, San Juan City with the theme “The BNSs: Making a Difference in the First 1,000 Days”.
The conference which was attended by more than 300 BNSs from all over Metro Manila together with the guests and resource speakers tackled the important role of the BNSs in creating awareness on the importance of proper infant and young child feeding practices, particularly exclusive breastfeeding for the first six (6) months and giving appropriate complementary food after six months while continuing breastfeeding.

The National Nutrition Council – National Capital Region (NNC-NCR) participated in the Kalusugang Pangkalahatan Caravan of the Department of Health - NCRO in partnership with the office of Hon. Congressman Roman Romulo at Barangay Rosario Covered Court, Pasig City on October 17, 2015. It is one of the High Impact 5 Program (HI5) activities of DOH-NCRO.
Nutrition Program Coordinator Milagros Elisa Federizo, Nutrition Officer I Bea Menorca, and Administrative Aide III Joseph Rodriguez participated in the caravan. NO I Menorca gave a short lecture and an audio visual presentation on the Ten Kumainments. Nutrikomiks on Breastfeeding, Ten Kumainments flyers, and Gulay bookmarks were distributed to an estimated 100 participants of the caravan. Several services were also provided such as lecture on family planning, responsible parenthood and reproductive health; immunization for infants and pregnant women; and medical check and treatment.

As mandated by Proclamation No. 524, we celebrate the National Rice Awareness Month every year during the month of November. This year, with the theme “Be RICEponsible in your own way now (BROWN) 4 good”, the Department of Agriculture (DA) through its Be Riceponsible campaign highlights the production and consumption of brown rice.
Aside from encouraging the public to not waste rice, this year’s celebration aims to inform the public of the benefits of eating brown rice as an alternative to white rice. Thus, the National Nutrition Council – National Capital Region (NNC-NCR) joined the DA in their Healthier Rice Cooking Challenge (Mother-Daughter Tandem), an on-the-spot cooking challenge for mothers and daughters held on November 7, 2015 at the Events Center, Fisher Mall, Quezon City.
