The City Nutrition Program Coordinators (CNPCs) in the NCR held its first meeting for the year on January 27, 2012 at the Health Studio 1, Marikina Healthy City Health Office. Among those discussed during the meeting were the mechanics and schedule of the Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI), theme and activities for Nutrition Month, and the implementation of Operation Timbang Plus this year as well as the OPT Database Management System (OPT-DBMS).
Some CNPCs raised concerns and issues particularly on the availability and fabrication/purchase of the wooden height boards which remain to be a challenge in many LGUs. Clarifications were also made regarding the correct usage of the OPT-DBMS. Despite the various problems and difficulties encountered by the LGUs, RNPC Federizo commended the local NPCs for their perseverance in trying to resolve issues and finding solutions to their problems concerning the use of both height/length and weight as indicators of growth starting this year. She encouraged them to give their best in making this year's OPT a successful one.

NNC-NCR represented by NPC Milagros Elisa V. Federizo was among the partner agencies of POPCOM-NCR that attended the Regional Population Congress held at Hotel Rembrandt on January 24, 2012. This year’s congress theme was, “Population, Poverty, and Governance” with a sub-theme, “Responsableng Pagpapamilya Para sa Kaunlaran”.
The congress was attended by city health officers, nutrition action officers, planning officers, population officers, and health workers from the 17 LGUs in MetroManila as well as partner agencies from the government, non-government organizations, and religious organizations.

The NNC-NCR Regional Office, as part of its local media plan, developed and printed tarpaulin posters promoting breastfeeding with the banner message, “Gawing TSEK ang Breastfeeding! Tama. Sapat. EKsklusibo!”. The tarpaulin poster aims to encourage mothers to exclusively breastfeed their babies from birth up to six months and give complementary foods at age six months while continuing breastfeeding up to two years and beyond. It emphasizes the message that breastfeeding is best not only for the baby but for the mother as well.
The tarpaulin streamers were distributed to the 16 cities and one municipality in Metro Manila to be posted in 456 health centers, 38 government lying-in clinics and 50 government hospitals through the help of the local nutrition committees.

The officers and board members of the Regional Federation of Barangay Nutrition Scholars in NCR had their first meeting for the year on 13 January 13 at the Multi-purpose Hall of San Juan City. During the meeting, they discussed and outlined the various activities of the federation for 2012 which include among others, conduct of the annual teambuilding activity, nutrition month activities, fund-raising project and the annual BNS convention.
They were also oriented on the OPT database management system (DBMS) and was reminded by NO III Lagadia regarding the measurement of not only weight but also the height of children during Operation Timbang using the WHO-Child Growth Standards (CGS). The other topics discussed were: the roles of BNSs as members of the Community Health Team (CHT); intensive promotion of breastfeeding in various settings; and, status of promote good nutrition (PGN) activities in the barangays such as Pabasa sa Nutrisyon (PSN).
The Federation of BNSs committed to make 2012 a productive and a fruitful year by continuously giving their best in the performance of their duties and functions.

The official and staff of the NNC-NCR devoted much of their first working day in 2012 in planning for the various regional activities for the year and strategizing how to improve further their productivity by adhering to the 5S Plus 2 System during their staff meeting held at the Conference Room of the Center for Health Development for Metro Manila in Mandaluyong City.
The 5S Plus 2 System is anchored on promoting the habits of good housekeeping, cleanliness, orderly filing, visual management and self-discipline geared towards provision of a clean and organize workplace, effective record management and on time retrieval of files and documents.

The National Nutrition Council-NCR was invited by the Center for Health Development for Metro Manila to join the Technical Working Group for this year’s search for 100% Tobacco-Free Environment, more commonly known as Red Orchids Awards.
NNC-NCR was represented by NOIII Emerenciana D. Lagadia in the TWG that is responsible for screening the entries, monitoring, and validating the different activities of the nominees as part of their anti-smoking program. The nominees for this year’s search include two cities namely, Marikina and Muntinlupa and three hospitals namely, Quirino Memorial Hospital, National Children’s Hospital and San Lorenzo Ruiz Women’s Hospital.
NOIII Lagadia as a member of the TWG screened and validated the documents submitted by the nominees and also joined the group in the monitoring and validation visits held on January 4-6 and 10, 2012. During the visit, the TWG took the opportunity to give technical assistance to the participating institutions to help them improve further their anti-smoking program and its documentation.
