Meeting with LGUs re DSP attended by nutritionist-dietitians from the 4 LGUsThe four (4) local government units (LGU) in Metro Manila covered by the Tutok Kainan Dietary Supplementation Program (TK-DSP) commit to continue providing the critical interventions in the First 1000 Days to all their program beneficiaries.

Tutok Kainan Dietary Supplementation Program is the National Nutrition Council’s (NNC) COVID-response and operationalizes RA 11148 or the Kalusugan at Nutrisyon ng Mag-Nanay Act. The TK-DSP focuses on the dietary supplementation of pregnant women and young children 6-23 months old to prevent stunting, especially during this time of pandemic where many families have difficulty meeting their food needs due to loss of livelihood and high cost of food and basic commodities.

The Federation of Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS) of NCR, Inc. will focus this year’s regional conference on the BNSs’ roles in the implementation of the Early Childhood Care and Development on the First 1000 Days (ECCD-F1K) Program.

The BNSs are community-based nutrition workers who provide basic nutrition and nutrition-related services and serve as the link between the service providers and the community. In the context of COVID-19 pandemic, the BNSs ensure the continuous delivery of nutrition services to the priority groups with focus on the First 1000 Days.

NCR Nutrition ChampionsMandaluyong City Mayor Carmelita A. Abalos and Muntinlupa City Mayor Jaime R. Fresnedi, two of the nutrition champions in Metro Manila, inspired the nutrition action officers (NAOs) with their messages during the 2nd NAOs’ Regional Conference held online on 23 September 2021.  The virtual conference was attended by more than 200 NAOs from the barangays, cities, and municipality in the region.  The two nutrition champions encouraged the NAOs to continue striving for the efficient and effective planning and implementation of nutrition programs of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN). The PPAN is the country’s framework for nutrition improvement.

More than 200 City/Municipal/Barangay Nutrition Action Officers (C/M/BNAOs) participated in the 2nd NAOs Regional Conference in NCR held virtually on September 23, 2021, to get ready for the implementation of the Supreme Court ruling on the Mandanas-Garcia case which opens opportunities for strengthening the LGU nutrition program.

The virtual conference held jointly by the National Nutrition Council-NCR and the Association of Nutrition Action Officers of NCR, Inc. (ANAO-NCR) aims to inform the NAOs on how they can seize the opportunities that the implementation of the Mandanas Ruling brings as it will substantially increase the share of the local government units (LGUs) from the national taxes. This means that the LGUs will have more budgets for programs, projects, and services starting in 2022.  The NAOs were encouraged to take advantage of the full devolution of certain functions of the Executive Committee Branch to the LGUs as stated in the Executive Order No. 138 s2021.

Dengue

 Dengue is an acute viral infection that affects mostly young children and infants. It is manageable with proper diet and medical care. Individuals who suffer from dengue must pay more attention to the diet as it plays a key role in recovery and helps medicines to work effectively.

Dengue virus is transmitted by female mosquitoes mainly of the species Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus which are also carriers of chikungunya and Zika viruses. Based on the data from Department of Health (DOH), from January 1 to July 3, 2021, a total of 32, 555 dengue cases with 199 deaths were reported, and is 43% lower compared to the same period in 2020.

While there are several medical treatment and care provided to dengue patients, healthy diet is important to hasten the recovery from the disease. But what foods should be included in the diet of dengue patients for faster recovery?

Breast Cancer Awareness Month NCR

Breast Cancer Awareness Month or BCAM is being celebrated this October with the theme “United We Fight” which emphasizes the importance of early breast examination and screening to fight breast cancer. BCAM is celebrated yearly to help increase awareness of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer and its prevention or treatment. During this event, all local and international organizations advocating for breast cancer awareness gather to celebrate and expand the reach of different programs for early detection and prevention of the said disease.

Breast cancer is a disease where cells in the breast multiply abnormally. This can be detected through self-breast examination and screening. It may develop in men and women but it is more common in the latter. According to the Department of Health, breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in women in the Philippines. For every 100 women, 3 women are estimated to develop breast cancer before the age of 75 (Philippine Society of Medical Oncology). In the Cancer Country Profile 2020 of the World Health Organization, breast cancer is also considered the most common type of cancer in the Philippines and has the highest incidence rate of 17.6% followed by lung cancer with an incidence rate of 12.2%.
