Everybody Needs to Act: Warriors against ObesityObesity affects more than 800 million people worldwide. Obesity, defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, is the abnormal or excessive fat buildup that presents a risk to health. With the recent changes in food trends and eating patterns, obesity has emerged as a significant health concern and fitness challenge in terms of maintaining a healthy weight.

March 4 of every year is celebrated as World Obesity Day, as convened by the World Obesity Foundation (WOF) and its global members. This year’s focus is simple “Everybody Needs to Act” to improve the world’s understanding, prevention, and treatment of obesity.

Boost immune system of school age children with good nutritionLowering of the Alert Level System for COVID-19 response from Level 3 in January to Level 1 starting this March 2022 means that the pandemic situation has improved. Less restriction also means that more schools will be able to hold face-to-face classes soon.

Parents may be a bit apprehensive about allowing their children to come to school. The best thing to do is to strengthen the immune system of your children to help fight COVID-19 and other illnesses. This is possible through good nutrition.

There are different strategies to improve immune function through a healthy diet, and for school-age children, the key is balance, moderation, and variety.

According to the Pinggang Pinoy, a child’s plate should include a large portion (at least half a plate) of glow foods or body regulating foods. These are fruits and vegetables that are rich in vitamins and minerals. They are also rich in fiber that is needed for the body’s daily functions.

Photo RNC NCR issues resolutionThe members of the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) of NCR encouraged Metro Manila Local Government Units (LGUs) to use of the Compendium of Local Ordinances and Issuances on Nutrition.  In a joint virtual meeting of the RNC and Regional Nutrition Management Group (RNMG) presided by NPC Milagros Elisa V. Federizo on behalf of RNC Chair Dr. Gloria J. Balboa held on February 17, 2022, the RNC and RNMG approved  RNC Resolution No. 2, Series of 2022, “Enjoining LGUs to Utilize the Compendium of Local Ordinances and Issuances on Nutrition and Submit Local Ordinances and Issuances in Support of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN)”.

The Compendium of Local Ordinances and Issuances on Nutrition is a project of the National Nutrition Council (NNC) in partnership with the Nutrition Officers Association of the Philippines (NAOPA), with support from Nutrition International and UNICEF Philippines.  It serves as a knowledge-sharing platform for LGUs to learn from initiatives of LGUs that have successfully harnessed the strength of policy instruments in scaling up nutrition.

Be one of the spoons NNC NCRBe one of the spoons – this is the National Nutrition Council’s call for action for nutrition improvement of the country.

The National Nutrition Council or NNC is the country’s highest policy making and coordinating body on nutrition. It was created on June 25, 1974 through Presidential Decree 491.

An interesting aspect of the NNC is its logo, which is a spoke of spoons. It symbolizes that we cannot improve the nutrition situation by spoonfeeding alone nor by the generosity of a single sector’s “spoon”. Solving the problem on malnutrition requires a collaborative effort, or a contribution from several “spoons”. It means creating and recreating ideas, seeking unity and a totality of approach for the improvement of Filipino lives.

Photo Nutrition Sensitive Programs PasigPasig City Nutrition Action Officer (CNAO), Ms. Marissa Almario, shared the city’s good practices in planning and implementing nutrition-sensitive programs during the virtual PPAN Movers’ General Assembly held on February 15, 2022 via Zoom. The general assembly was attended by nutritionist-dietitians from the 17 local government units in Metro Manila.

Nutrition-sensitive programs are non-nutrition programs that are tweaked in their design to produce nutritional outcomes. They address the underlying causes of malnutrition such as inadequate household food security, inadequate care and inadequate health services, and an unhealthy household environment.

Some of the city’s nutrition-sensitive programs featured were  “Gulayan sa Bakuran ni Nanay tungo sa wastong kalusugan”, a home vegetable gardening project targeting nutritionally at-risk pregnant and lactating mothers and families of undernourished children 6-23 months old. All public elementary schools in the city also maintain school vegetable gardens through the “Gulayan sa Paaralan” Project. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, harvested vegetables were used as additional ingredients in the school-based supplementary feeding program.
