The month of February is celebrated as the Philippine Heart Month by virtue of Proclamation No. 1096 signed on January 9, 1973. This aims to make more Filipinos aware of the serious health problem of heart diseases and how to keep their heart healthy. We also celebrate Valentine's Day during the 14th of February, and many celebrate it by sharing hearty meals with their loved ones, friends, and family.
Many celebrate Valentine’s Day by eating out, usually having a fancy, heavy dinner with their special someone, or with family and friends. The big date night plate is usually composed of high-calorie foods such as meats, pasta, rich desserts, and wine or alcoholic beverages. Having too much of foods that are high in salt, fat, and sugar is a big no-no. You don’t want to get heartbroken with hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease, right?

While the country is still in the pandemic and everybody is trying to protect themselves from the virus, the Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs) in Metro Manila are also on the lookout to prevent deterioration of nutritional status among children 0-59 months old by measuring the weight and height of these children.
In an online meeting of the Federation of Barangay Nutrition Scholar of NCR, Inc. on January 26, 2022, the BNSs from the nine (9) LGUs of Metro Manila shared that they have started the conduct of Operation Timbang (OPT) Plus in their barangays.
The OPT Plus is the annual weight and height-taking of children aged 0-59 months old done from January to March. The information gathered in the OPT Plus is used to identify malnourished children that should be prioritized in the provision of nutrition interventions.
Although the surge of COVID-19 cases in the region limits the BNSs to go house to house, they measure the weight and height of children visiting health centers. Infection and prevention control protocols are strictly followed such as wearing of face masks and ensuring that tools are sanitized before and after use.

The Barangay Nutrition Scholars of Caloocan City, like the other BNSs in Metro Manila, are conducting the Operation Timbang (OPT) Plus in the different barangays of the city this first quarter of the year. This activity spearheaded by the City Nutrition Committee is wholeheartedly supported by the Barangay Captains, Barangay Nutrition Action Officers, and the Purok Leaders in the different barangays in the city.
OPT Plus is conducted every first quarter of the year, from January to March. It is the annual weighing and length/height measurement of all preschoolers 0-59 months old or below five (5) years old in all barangays to determine their nutritional status. Data from the OPT Plus indicate the number of stunted, wasted, underweight, and overweight infants and preschoolers. It also shows the number of children with normal nutritional status. These numbers determine the magnitude of the malnutrition problem in the barangay.
