Vitamin D is a micronutrient that we obtain either from food and dietary supplement or is being synthesized by our body through sun exposure. Before the body can utilize the vitamin D, it must undergo two processes of activation or hydroxylation. The first step occurs in the liver where vitamin D is converted to 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D], also known as “calcidiol.” The second process is where a more active form of vitamin D is hydroxylated in the kidneys to form 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D [1,25(OH)2D], also known as “calcitriol.”
In the Philippine Dietary Reference Intake (PDRI) formulated by Food and Nutrition Research Institute, Department of Science and Technology (FNRI-DOST), shows the recommended intake of Vitamin D among infants (0-11 mos), children (1-18 yo), adult (19-49 yo) to be equivalent to 5 mcg or 200 IU. While 10 mcg or 400 IU is recommended for 50–59-year-olds. And 15 mcg or 600 IU for the elderly aged 60 years and above.
