Legazpi City. NNC Regional Office V successfully launched the NGF or Giya sa Marhay na Nutrisyon para sa Pilipino on 26 November 2013 at La Piazza Hotel and Convention Center, Legazpi City. The NGF was translated by the media group during their planning-workshop on 30 October. A total of 220 participants consisting of the RNC/RTWG members, Regional BNS Association, NGOs, NAOs, DCNPCs, BHWs, BNSs, peer counselors, and media from different parts of the region attended the said event.
NPC Reario opened the program and explained the importance of NGF encouraging the participants to promote and adopt it to their respective areas. She discussed the 10 messages and their implication to health.
RNC Chair and Regional Director of DOH-CHD V, Gloria J. Balboa delivered an inspirational speech stressing out that nutrition education still remains as the cornerstone to improving the nutritional status of the populations in the long term. Disseminating simple and practical nutrition messages that encourage individuals to consume an adequate and well-balance diet together with a healthy lifestyle is therefore a most desirable objective. She quoted the following from Mahatma Gandhi and Mark Twain as her parting words, ‘Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.’

Legazpi City. Officers and Members of the Board of Directors of Bicol Media sa Nutrisyon had their Oath Taking during the Regional Launching of new NGF, held on 26 November at La Piazza Hotel and Convention Center, Legazpi City before Regional Director Arnel B. Garcia of DSWD FO 5. Its president, Mr. Tito B. Ordinario, Station Manager of 99.5 Love Radio, Legazpi City was not present but its Vice President, Mr. Henry Maceda,
Vice President for Program of DZGB/TV 6, Legazpi City and the rest of the officers were present. In Mr. Maceda’s speech on behalf of the group, he accepted the challenge of being NNC’s partner in ensuring the dissemination of correct nutrition information through the print, radio and television. The media group is actively supporting NNC’s campaign in disseminating the new NGF and other nutrition and health related messages by airing NNC’s nutrition messages and integrating these in local radio programs. The event, covered live on radio by DWRL, was likewise featured by local ABSCBN through its TV Patrol Bicol and GMA 7’s Baretang Bikol shown on the same day.

The whole nation celebrates the month of July as the Nutrition Month pursuant to Section 7 of Presidential Decree 491, known as the Nutrition Act of the Philippines. The month-long celebration encompasses a different nutrition-focused theme every year to create greater awareness among the public on the importance of nutrition.
In response, the National Nutrition Council (NNC) Region 5 led the Regional Launching of the 40th observance of Nutrition Month held last 1 July 2014 at Camarines Sur Polytechnic Colleges (CSPC), Nabua Camarines Sur with the theme: “Kalamidad paghandaan: Gutom at malnutrisyon agapan!” (Prepare for emergencies to prevent hunger and malnutrition!). Since the Philippines has pre-existing condition of malnutrition that can be worsened by emergencies and disasters, the theme was focused on Nutrition in Emergencies (NiEm) to foster preparedness and engagement within the community and to promote strategies on how to improve recovery from disaters.
“Because of Bicol’s stubborn under-nutrition statistics, this launching is also a declaration of war against hunger and malnutrition", Atty. Fernando D. Simbulan, Nabua’s Municipal Administrator said in his Welcome Remarks.
Supported by the members of Regional Technical Working Group (RTWG) and Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET) from DSWD, DOST, DepEd, Intervida Philippines Foundation (NGO), and DBM together with C/MNAOs and DCNPCs of Camarines Sur, the successful launching convened over 200 participants composed of representatives from various sectors: faculty members and students of CSPC, nurses, midwives and the members of the City and Barangay Nutrition Committees from Iriga City and Rinconada areas - Baao, Buhi, Bula, Balatan, Bato and Nabua. Nabua Vice Mayor Ramiro Felipe L. Fortuna IV and other officials from private and government agencies also attended the said activity.

Various agencies coming from both national and regional government branches, the private sector, and representatives from UNICEF, have gathered in a forum, with the objective of replicating the formation of a Bantay Asin task force particularly in Regions of CAR, 2, 4a, 4b, 6, 7, and 8 where high prevalence of IDD was noted, proved very effective. The formation of such a task force addressed the immediate bottlenecks that prevent the assured supply of adequately-iodized salt, at the provincial and municipal levels. The best practice of such regional task forces suggests that the measures each region requires vary and by no means always replicable in other regions. This may be attributed to the differing channels of distribution of salt from the source of supply in the regions. Meanwhile, the disturbing UIE levels based on mild to severe cases of children aged 6-12 years of age (39.7% distribution), pregnant (49% of distribution) and lactating mothers (59.5% of distribution) only indicates that a Bantay Asin task force should be initiated at the regional level, and then replicated at the provincial and municipal levels.
An assessment study of the extent of the Patak sa Asin in the Market found out that efforts to intensively monitor the iodine levels in salt have waned since after the campaign of Patak sa Asin. Because monitoring has taken a back seat, there is a widespread lack of information about the program and the IDD situation. The six provinces of Bicol region still remain in the list of areas with high prevalence of malnutrition, and IDD is identified as one of the contributing factors.
The event will be attended by representatives of various stakeholders coming from both private sector and government agencies, which were invited by DOH, FDA, NNC and UNICEF. Said forum will be held at the Hotel St. Ellis, Legazpi City on 20 February 2014, from 8:00 to 5:00 p.m.

25 June 1974. Then President Ferdinand Marcos signed the Presidential Decree 491 which declared that nutrition is a priority program of the government. This law authorized the creation of an agency that will create nutrition policies and coordinate, monitor and evaluate nutrition programs in the country. Thus, the National Nutrition Council was born.
Forty years later, employees, personnel, clients and partners all over the Philippines converged to celebrate this momentous event in the history of nutrition in our country. The weeklong celebration, on 23-27 June 2014, held at the NNC Central Office, Taguig City, involved the following events:
A Regional Exhibit where each region in the country, from regions 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, CAR, CARAGA, ARMM, and NCR, displayed the products of their respective regions, from food, crops, and other major produces to handicraft and fashion items. Each regional office also showed their major accomplishments (from the beginning to the present) proudly displayed) in a 2ft. x 6ft. tarpaulin proudly displayed ( situated) in front of their respective tents all throughout the 3-day exhibit on 23-25 June 2014.
A Team Building Activity on 24 June 2014, where competence, friendship, and camaraderie were the center of the whole-day activity. The atmosphere was happy and joyous with the different games and activities that the whole NNC family eagerly participated. (Different) The group was divided into 5 teams. (Staff from (different) various regions were distributed into 5 teams to give everybody the chance to meet and work with everybody else). Everyone showed their competent side but cooperation and determination to complete the tasks given were very much evident throughout the day. After each activity, group assessments were made and application to daily work was identified. (how the tasks can relate to their daily work in the office).

Evacuees in Albay are facing various challenges while Mayon Volcano remains in a state of unrest due to the movement of potentially eruptible magma. Issues on the availability of food, safe water and sanitation facilities as well as the underlying health status of the population plague Mayon evacuation centers. In the nutrition assessment conducted last 19-26 of September in Malilipot, Daraga, Camalig, Guinobatan, Sto. Domingo and Tabaco City and Ligao City, there was a significant number of Moderate Acute Malnourished (MAM) and Severe Acute Malnourished (SAM), 241 (7.31%) and 84 (2.54%), respectively. Reaching the critical level of 5%, the situation requires immediate nutrition interventions. The high prevalence of underweight in the province of Albay is a pre-existing condition and continues to be a serious concern.
The Department of Health Regional Office V and National Nutrition Council in coordination with World Food Programme (WFP) and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) conducted a 3-day Training on Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition for medical and allied health professionals held at Hotel Villa Angelina, Legazpi City on 15-17 October 2014.
