RO 5 2016 Prov IYCF WHOCGS Trainers MeetingLegazpi City. A series of trainings will be conducted by the National Nutrition Council Bicol on WHO-Child Growth Standards (WHO-CGS) for health workers and Peer Counsellors training on Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF). With funding support from the Department of Health RO V, these trainings will cover the six provinces of Bicol Region namely Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Masbate, and Sorsogon. Last 14-15 January 2016, a 2-day live-in meeting was conducted at Hotel Villa Angelina in Legazpi City to review the modules of the 2 trainings and strategize on how best to conduct these.

RO 5 2016 Laptop grant to BNS in Naga CityNaga City – All twenty seven (27) Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) of Naga City received a brand new laptop during the BNS Planning Workshop held last 18 January 2016 at Bicol Science and Technology Centrum. Mayor John G. Bongat personally initiated the awarding and distribution of the laptop computers assisted by the City Nutrition Program Coordinators Ms. Raquel B. Buere, Ms. Rosemarie V. Zuniega, and Mr. Alvin V. Villacruz. The 3 CNPCs likewise each received the same unit of laptop as managers of the nutrition programs in the city.

12179614 10153235634893753 1420048641 nKnowledge, skills and positive attitude on Nutrition Program Management (NPM) is necessary to effectively and efficiently respond to local nutrition situation with appropriate interventions.

On 19-23 October 2015, the National Nutrition Council Region V conducted one batch of training on NPM for newly designated nutrition action officers and other members to enhance their capability and strengthen the capacities of the nutrition committee and other local implementers. A total of twenty-six (26) participants coming from the provinces of Albay, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur and Sorsogon and two cities namely Masbate City and Sorsogon City successfully completed the 5-day training-workshop held at Jennifer’s Kababayan Hotel, Legazpi City.

The training aimed to enhance the knowledge, skill and attitude of participants along the key processes integrated within the whole course of NPM. It was lso expected to help nutrition program managers and local implementers to learn, identify and adopt strategies to ensure functionality of the respective  local nutrition committees.

NGO Forum vertical 2ft x 4ft comThrough the 2nd Regional NGO Forum conducted last 4 December at Hotel Venezia in Legazpi City, NNC Bicol continued to intensify partnerships with local government and non-government organizations. Nine (9) NGOs from different parts of the Bicol region and eight (8) agency members of the Regional Nutrition Committee (RNC) took part in the said event. Themed “NGO-GO Cooperation towards Optimal First 1000 Days”, the activity generally aimed to contribute to the Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN) movement, targeting to generate commitments in 2016 from stakeholders, with emphasis on the first 1000 days.

NPC Arlene R. Reario shared the presentation on “Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD), The First 1000 Days”, highlighting that good nutrition in the first 1000 days sets the foundation on children's growth and development. NO III Valeza of NNC provided the input on Updated Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition 2014-2016. NPC Reario reiterated the significance of NGO-GO collaboration in nutrition action and improvement.

Sharing their experiences in nutrition program implementation during the panel discussion were Ms. Venus Laforteza, Health and Nutrition Specialist of World Vision Philippines and Ms. Natividad Cardel, City Nutrition Program Coordinator of Legazpi City. Ms. Laforteza discussed their Pinoy Nutrition Hub experience whereas CNPC Cardel imparted Legazpi City’s best practices towards optimal nutrition of mother and children.

Ms. Cristina Rico, Planning Officer II of DOH RO V led the workshop to firm up initial investments and re-align future commitments of NGOs along the PPAN priority actions.
Collaborative efforts of various sectors and not through a single spoon alone will accelerate action towards a well-nourished citizenry. With positive responses and commitments from participating NGOs, the door for scaling up nutrition interventions in the Bicol region was further widened.

RO5 2015 TOT on BNS Basic CourseTwenty-two (22) participants composed of newly designated nutrition action officers, local nutrition program coordinators, and new members of the municipal nutrition committees from six provinces in the Bicol region completed the five-day Training of Trainers on the Basic Course for Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) conducted by the National Nutrition Council-Bicol on 5-9 October at Starview Hotel, Naga City.

The training was facilitated by three seasoned trainers of the region namely, Ms. Cathy Austria (former Nutrition Officer of Camarines Sur); Ms. Sheree Longaza (Nutrition Officer III of Albay) and Ms. Raquel Buere (Nutrition Officer of Naga City). NPC Reario joined the group on the 4th and 5th day of the training while Mr. Marvin Agripa, Nutrition Officer I of NNC acted as secretariat.

Naga City- About 300 participants comprised of local chief executives, members of the local nutrition committee, nutrition action officers, district and city nutrition program coordinators, Regional Nutrition Committee members and RTWG, Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET) members, barangay nutrition scholars, media partners and invited guests gathered to witness and participate in the 2015 Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony held on 20 November 2015 at Villa Caceres Hotel in Naga City. This annual prestigious event of the NNC Bicol gives due recognition to local government units in the region that have shown outstanding performance in managing their local nutrition program. Likewise, in this event, NNC honors the outstanding Barangay Nutrition Scholars who have done commendable performance in their barangays by doing ordinary things extraordinarily. 

From the results of the conduct of the Monitoring and Evaluation of Local Level Plan Implementation (MELLPI) from March to August 2015 through the combined efforts of the RNET, the following distinctions and recognitions were laid:

These 23 outstanding barangays out of the 100 barangays from six provinces, 21 municipalities and 7 cities visited were identified by the RNET after receiving an average score of at least 95 percent during the nutrition evaluation. They received a certificate of recognition and a token of an 18-inch industrial fan to be used in their nutrition center.
