RO5 2013 bicols dcnpc pcnaos mergingThe Provincial/City Nutrition Action Officers (P/CNAO) of the Bicol region held its 1st Regular Meeting at Legazpi Amigos Hometel on 27 February 2013. During the meeting, the group approved the proposal of its president, Dr. Vilma Hao to merge the PCNAOs and DCNPCs associations into one. She noted that both groups work for the same cause. Moreover, she noted that whenever the PCNAOs are not available, their DCNPC represents them in the meeting. NPC Reario committed to inform Ms. Raquel Buere, the President of the Bicol Nutrition Program Coordinators Association regarding this proposal. On the forthcoming Nutrition Month Celebration in July, the group will come up with a common activity to launch 2013 Nutrition Month on the 1st of July. Schedule of forthcoming annual nutrition evaluation or MELLPI was also finalized during the meeting. Given the national elections in May, most of the regional validation visits will be done from May 20 to end of June. However, the PCNAOs are more concerned about their own provincial and city nutrition evaluation, given that their members are busy with their own activities in the next 2 months. They are nonetheless optimistic that cooperation of the members could be harnessed once again this year and support would be provided by their local chief executives.

RO5 2013 bns pa raffleThe officers of the Bicol Region BNS Association will hold its major fund raising activity on 26 July 2013 during its first BNS Regional Convention. This was agreed during the association’s first meeting for the year held on 28 Feb at Legazpi City.  The group hopes to raise about 250,000 to fund the projects of various BNS associations in the region such as training and capacity building, livelihood program and advocacy activities. Initial plans for nutrition month celebration include the Search for Best Container Gardening among BNSs per province and city. The members are also excited over the plan of NNC to recognize BNSs who have served their communities for at least 25 years. This early, Iriga City, Camarines Sur and Camarines Norte are sure to have awardees already as 5 to 10 BNSs have been identified to be serving their own communities for at least 25 years now.

bns plaqueThe 3,300 strong membership association of Barangay Nutrition Scholars in Bicol Region will hold their annual conference here in Legazpi City, on 29, August 2013 at the Albay Astrodome. BNSs, as they are popularly known, “serves” as the backbone in combating malnutrition at the community level. Thus the event is dubbed “BNS Empowerment Towards Community Action Against Malnutrition.”

Said event will be attended by 1,000 delegates and representatives coming from the 6 provinces of the Bicol region, in an annual gathering that seeks to enhance their knowledge and skills in promoting appropriate nutrition interventions at the community level. Despite recent economic development of the country, malnutrition remains one of the major problems besetting both the countryside and urban areas of the country, especially Bicol Region.

Ms. Erlinda B. Nollora, the current President of the Bicol Region BNS Association, Inc. (BRBNSA, Inc.) hails from Barangay Hanawan, Ocampo, Camarines Sur. She has been serving as a BNS for 28 years now, one of the longest serving BNS in the region. President Nollora also seats as a member of the board of director of the National BNS Federation, Inc. The BRBNSA,Inc. started consolidating themselves 3 years ago, through series of meetings, capacity building and seminars. Annually, BNSs across the country are being recognized by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) with their exemplary performance through the Search for City, Provincial, Regional and National Outstanding BNS. NNC also recognizes long serving BNS for their loyalty and continuous service.

“We are very thankful for the support being extended to us by the National Nutrition Council. If not for them, our efforts would not have been recognized, and we would not have the courage to band ourselves and strengthen our resolve to pursue the advocacy and volunteer work to address malnutrition, in the Bicol Region.”

RO5 2013 Child Care on Mothers DayThe Liberty Commercial Center Legazpi conducted a One-day Nutritional Activity dubbed as “Child Care on Mother’s Day” on 12 May 2013 from 8:00 am to 12:00 nn at LCC Activity Center. This activity is part of the on-going outreach program of LCC together with the humanitarian activities focused primarily on promoting the Health and Welfare of indigent children. 110 children ages 1-5 years old from Barangays San Roque and Sabang, Legazpi City were provided with supplemental feeding, multi-vitamins and medical check-up.

Weight and height taking were also conducted with the help of Barangay Nutrition Scholars of targeted barangays. The National Nutrition Council together with the City Nutrition Office of Legazpi were invited to extend their support and technical assistance during the said activity. Mrs. Marlyn L. Beldad gave a short message in behalf of Mrs. Arlene R. Reario, Nutrition Program Coordinator of NNC who was still in Manila after a trip in Bangkok, Thailand for the Asia Region Knowledge Management Workshop on Children and Food Security.

The message given by NPC Reario which was translated in bicol dialect by Mrs. Beldad emphasized the role of mothers in rearing their children through proper breastfeeding which is the best intervention to ward off sickness and death of children. It was further stressed that breastmilk is the best food for babies and thus, breastfeeding is considered as anti-poverty strategy to reduce family expenses.

b 220 132 2734 0   images stories region5 2013 FILES Nutrition in emergencies training for Juban and IrosinSorsogon City.  WFP together with the provincial government of Sorsogon and NNC Bicol will conduct training on nutrition in emergency for the municipalities of Irosin and Juban in the province of Sorsogon. Both these municipalities are prone to emergency due to the threat of typhoon and volcanic eruptions. At least 20 members of the municipal disaster reduction and coordinating council from each municipality are expected to attend this training.  As members of the municipal nutrition committee, the same group will act as the members of the municipal nutrition cluster, a sub-cluster of the local disaster risk reduction and management council (LDRRMC).  Ms. Salome Navales, the Municipal Nutrition Action Officer of Irosin said that “This is a timely training as we want to ensure that the vulnerable groups such as the infants, pregnant and lactating women, the elderly and the persons with disability are given extra care and love, particularly during emergency situations.”  For her part, NPC Arlene R. Reario of NNC Bicol affirmed the need to capacitate members of the provincial and municipal nutrition clusters to ensure that they are ready to respond to the nutrition needs during emergencies and disasters.   She added that one of the important outputs of the training is the formulation of the Nutrition in Emergency Preparedness, Response and Recovery Plan in the 2 municipalities.

"Saktong Iodine sa Asin" Quality Seal Region V LaunchingLegazpi City –The National Nutrition Council Bicol in partnership with the Department of Health Region V and Food and Drug Administration Field Office V launched in the Bicol Region the Saktong Iodine sa AsinQuality Seal last 08 September 2015 at Kanzo Hall & Restaurant, Legazpi City. This is to promote usage and raise awareness on the benefits of fortification of salt as a means to increase the iodine intake of the population particularly of the at risk group thus eliminating the problem of Iodine deficiency.

The said activity was attended by more than 70 participants representing the regional government agencies such as PIA Bicol, DOST V, DA V, DSWD FO V, DepEd V, Bureau of Customs, Philippine Ports Authority, and PNP RO 5. These member agencies also comprise the Regional Bantay Asin Task Force (RBATF) which serves as watchdog of the distribution and supply of adequately-iodized salt through strengthened monitoring and wider dissemination of advocacies legally supported by resolutions and guidelines and complementing the initiatives of partners in the national level.

Also present were those from DOLE, DepED Albay Division, teachers of Bagtang Elementary School, BNSs, Provincial/City/Municipal Nutrition Action Officers (NAOs), District and City Nutrition Program Coordinators (DCNPCs), Bicol Regional Barangay Nutrition Scholars Association (BRBNSA, Inc.) officers and members, Bicol Media sa Nutrisyon Members, Manila Times Correspondent and ABS-CBN Legazpi who covered the celebration.
