BUTUAN CITY- National Nutrition Council Assistant Secretary and Executive Director, Dr. Azucena M. Dayanghirang served as the keynote speaker and challenged the region in producing more local nutrition focal points and local government units as nutrition champions and awardees of nutrition during her speech at the Regional Nutrition Awarding Ceremony (RNAC) on 29 November 2022 at LMX Convention Center, Butuan City.
This year the Regional Nutrition Evaluation Team (RNET) recommended 11 LGUs as Green Banner Seal of Compliance Awardees and 16 local nutrition focal points, 6 of which are outstanding BNSs contenders who were recognized during the Ceremony.
The LGUs and LNFPs have shown excellent performance in managing and implementing their respective nutrition programs as reflected during the monitoring and evaluation of local level plan implementation (MELLPI).
ASec Dayanghirang relayed that the awards are manifestation of the leadership and commitments of the local chief executives to invest, and to prioritize nutrition; the commitment and coordination of the members of the local nutrition committees from the provinces, the cities, the municipalities, and the barangays; and the persistent attention and unwavering action of the Nutrition Office staff, and the Barangay Nutrition Scholars.

BUTUAN CITY- To complete the UNICEF- Philippines over-all activities for Southern Leyte and Caraga region post typhoon Odette, a one-day After-Action-Review (AAR) workshop was conducted on 9 December 2022 at the Discovery Suites Hotel, Ortigas Pasig City.
National Nutrition Council Executive Director Asec. Azucena M. Dayanghirang in her message delivered by Ms. Ellen Ruth F. Abella highlighted the importance of past experiences.
For more effective and efficient management of nutrition in emergencies, we need to learn from our previous nutrition in emergency experiences, she stated.
The after-action review workshop aimed at presenting the key achievements against the planned results; documenting programmatic, operational challenges, constraints, and good practices of our overall presence; and discussing measures and recommendations to sustain and expand the results from UNICEF Support.

TANDAG CITY- Former Tandag City Nutrition Action Officer, Ms. Ermalinda Donasco inspired the audience during the City Nutrition Awarding Ceremony held on 2 December 2022 at Shacene Grand Ballroom, Tandag City.
"A nutrition worker should have passion and love towards her work" Ms. Donasco shared.
In her message she narrated how she started to build nutrition programs in then Municipality of Tandag.
“Pabasa sa Nutrisyon” and infant and young child feeding practices are being conducted by the Nutrition Office even at the remotest.
Ms. Donasco also shared the house to house campaign of constructing a toilet facility. She recalled how difficult for urban families to put importance of building toilets.
The importance of potable water is always included in nutrition advocacy, she highlighted.

BUTUAN CITY – In collaboration with Nutrition Action Officers (NAOs), the Provincial Bantay Asin Task Force of Agusan del Norte together with the Regional Bantay Asin Task Force (RBATF) randomly collected salt samples from retailers, food establishments, and bakeries in the municipalities of Nasipit, Carmen, Kitcharao, Santiago and City of Cabadbaran on November 17-18, 2022.
This is to reinforce advocacy in battling the problems of micronutrient deficiencies, specifically, iodine deficiency disorders (IDD).
Republic Act No. 8172 or “An Act Promoting Salt Iodization Nationwide and For Related Purposes,” also known as the ASIN Law, passed in 1995 requires the iodization of all food-grade salt for human and animal consumption.
This is the reason why RBATF and the Local Bantay Asin Task Force (PBATF) were organized to reinforce the regulation and monitoring of adequately iodized salts in Caraga region.

BUTUAN CITY -- Officials in Siargao joined in a dinner meeting with the New Zealand Ambassador to the Philippines Peter Kell and UNICEF Representative in the Philippines, Ms. Oyunsaikhan Dendevnorov on 30 November 2022 at General Luna, Surigao del Norte.
The meeting provided an avenue to discuss the current situation of the island after typhoon Odette hit the area on 16 December 2021.
The effect of malnutrition during disasters was highlighted encouraging the policy makers and implementers to invest in nutrition.
Productivity of a child in the future was made by everyone to reflect on. The power of first 1,000 days and the external factors contributing to the growth of a child.
The future of the community depends on how the current leaders nourish the children added Ambassador Peter Kell.

TANDAG CITY- Mayor Roxanne C. Pimentel recognized and lauded the nutrition implementers, partners and stakeholders in accepting the challenge to help and implement nutrition programs despite the challenges of COVID-19.
This was shared during the City Nutrition Awarding Ceremony on 2 December 2022 at Shacene Grand Ballroom, Tandag City.
She mentioned of better health outcomes through the participation of different stakeholders.
Recently, the City Nutrition Committee chaired by Mayor Pimentel expanded its members including the faith-based organization.
The good Mayor extended her warmest congratulations to City Nutrition Office, the 21 Barangay Nutrition Committees and the Barangay Nutrition Scholars who actively mobilized the implementation of nutrition programs in 2022.
