RO9 PHHeartMonthWe all know that February is the month of hearts since most of us celebrate Valentine’s Day on February 14. But do you know that February is also Philippine Heart Month? It was declared by virtue of Proclamation No. 1096 signed on January 9, 1973 to promote awareness on various heart diseases as serious and growing health concerns among Filipinos.

According to the Department of Health (DOH), heart diseases are among the leading causes of death in the country. With 47.1% prevalence, the leading cause of heart disease in the country is rheumatic fever. It is an inflammatory disease that can develop into rheumatic heart disease when streptococcal throat infection or scarlet fever isn’t properly treated. This has been followed by hypertensive (17.2%), and atherosclerosis, the buildup of fats, cholesterol, and other substances in and on your artery walls which can restrict blood flow with 15.5%.

RO9 DSPOrientationThirty (30) participants, consisting of Provincial/City/Municipal Nutrition Action Officers (P/C/MNAOs), District/City/Municipal Nutrition Program Coordinators (D/C/MNPCs), and SB Committee Chairpersons on Health and other Social Services attended the Orientation on Tutok Kainan: Dietary Supplementation Program conducted by the National Nutrition Council Region IX on 22 January 2021 at 9AM via Google Meet.

Tutok Kainan is the newly-conceived nutrition specific project of our government. It is NNC’s COVID-response and a means to operationalize RA 11148 or the Kalusugan at Nutrisyon ng Mag-Nanay Act. This project focuses on a much-needed nutrition intervention, dietary supplementation of pregnant women and young children 6-23 months old. The main objective of this program is to contribute to the prevention of stunting among children 0-23 months old by improving the quality and quantity of food and nutrient intakes and utilization of related ECCD F1K services among nutritionally at-risk pregnant women and children 6-23 months old.

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Jan 22 (PIA) – COVID-19 vaccination for the priority population in Zamboanga Peninsula is projected to begin by March or within the second quarter of this year, a health official here announced.

“Preparations are now being done, we will be rolling out orientation and training for the vaccination and this will be cascaded to the local government units and hospitals,” said Dr. Dennis Dacayanan, medical officer of the Department of Health (DOH) in Region 9 during the Philippine Information Agency's (PIA) Kapihan na Zamboanga this morning (January 22). “The projected vaccination is March or within the second quarter.”

RO9 GoiterThe National Nutrition Council Region IX joins the nation in the observance of Goiter Awareness Week (GAW). By virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 1188 on 11 December 2016, Goiter Awareness Week is observed every fourth week of January.

Goiter is a health condition that involves the enlargement of the thyroid gland. This causes the formation of a lump in front of the neck. The most common cause of goiter is the lack of iodine in the diet and the lack of iodine in the body may result to Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) that has different signs and symptoms. Pregnant mothers who lack iodine in the body may experience miscarriage or give birth to a stillborn baby. Adult with iodine deficiency may encounter lethargy, lack of mental alertness, obesity, dry hair and goiter while children will have poor performance in school and worst, mental and growth retardations.

RO9 OPTPlusThe Office of the Executive Director of the National Nutrition Council (NNC) had released NNC Memorandum 2020-010 to provide interim guidelines in the conduct of OPT Plus, nutrition screening and growth monitoring and promotion activities in the context of COVID-19 and other related issues. The guidelines are in line with the provisions of DOH-Department Circular 2020-0167 Continues Provision of Essential Health Services during the COVID-19 Pandemic and DOH-Department Memorandum 2020-0237 Interim Guidelines for the Delivery of Nutrition Services in the Context of COVID-19 Pandemic under Growth and Development Monitoring and Promotion. The memorandum was issued for the purpose of ensuring the continuance of the conduct of growth monitoring and promotion activities while observing the proper health protocols provided by the Department of Health (DOH).

RO9 1stQuarterRTWGRNAHCThe Regional Technical Working Group of the Regional Nutrition and Anti-Hunger Committee (RTWG-RNAHC) of Zamboanga Peninsula conducted its 1st Quarter Meeting via Google Meet on 21 January 2021. The said activity was presided by Nutrition Program Coordinator Nimfa D. Ekong of the National Nutrition Council Region IX.

Attaining a quorum, the meeting was called to order to discuss these agenda: a.) 5 resolutions for adoption, b.) Interim Guidelines in the conduct of OPT Plus, Nutrition Screening, Growth Monitoring and Promotion Activities in the context of COVID-19 Pandemic and Other Related Disasters, c.) “Tutok Kainan” Supplementation Program, d.) presentation of accomplishments reports by different agencies, and e.) other matters.
