RO9 BNSMalnutrition is a global problem in which no country can continue to neglect. Millions of people are suffering from different forms of malnutrition. In the UNICEF report entitled “The State of the World’s Children 2019”, it stated that the numbers are becoming worryingly high. Globally, one in three children under the age of five is stunted, wasted or overweight and, in some cases, suffers from a combination of two of these forms of malnutrition, while in East Asia and Pacific it is nearly one in five.

In the Philippines, the percentage of stunted and nutrient-deficient children is slow to reduce due to several factors such as poverty, low consumer demand for nutritious food, natural and manmade disasters, and limited capacity of some local government units to deliver nutrition interventions. In order to decrease the number of stunted, wasted, and obese children and demand the active participation and community engagement at the grassroots level, Presidential Decree No. 1569 also known as the Barangay Nutrition Program (BNP) was enacted by then President Ferdinand Marcos.

RO9 BreastfeedingLatchBreastfeeding is one of the most effective ways to ensure child health and survival. This is because during the first days after birth, the mother’s breasts produce a thick and yellowish fluid called colostrum. It is high in protein, low in sugar, and loaded with beneficial compounds. It is also packed with antibodies that protect babies in their early life stage. However, according to World Health Organization, 2 out of 3 infants are not exclusively breastfed for the recommended first 6 months of a child’s life. That is why WHO, national and local government units, and other non-government organizations and agencies promote breastfeeding as the best source of nourishment for infants. WHO specifically is working to increase the rate of exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months up to at least 50% by 2025.

MANILA, Jan. 6 -- "Closer and more sustained cooperation with the private sector will further strengthen government's efforts to address hunger and health concerns brought about by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic."

This was the key message of Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles during the Pilipinas Kontra Gutom (PKG) kick-off event last Wednesday, January 6, 2020 which was attended by stakeholders and program partners from the private sector.

The PKG is a multi-sectoral collaboration involving government, the academe, non-profit organizations, private corporations and members of the general public meant to address the root causes of involuntary hunger. Its objectives are strategically aligned with the aims of the Duterte administration's "zero hunger" drive under the National Food Policy.
