Christmas season is the time where family members are gathered to celebrate the holidays, exchange presents, and sit down to eat dinner. Most of the time, Filipinos tend to order or cook oily and fatty foods such as the famous lechon, onion rings, calamares, fried chicken and other deep-fried foods. While they can be an enjoyable treat during the holidays and special occasions, greasy foods negatively affect your body and health in both short and long terms.
Greasy foods may cause weight gain due to their high calorie count. This is because they are cooked in large amounts of fat. In return, high intake of fried foods increased risk of weight gain and obesity which is associated with many negative health benefits such as heart diseases, stroke, and diabetes. Moreover, greasy food spends more time in your stomach, which can cause bloating, nausea, and stomach pain. In people with certain digestive conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), these foods may trigger stomach pain, cramping, and diarrhea.

Calamansi fruit serves as an important fruit crop in the Philippines. According to the Philippines Statistics Authority, the country produced 14.86 thousand metric tons in the first quarter of 2019. At the regional level, Zamboanga City is one of the major growing areas of calamansi in Mindanao with 1,077 hectares. As the demand for calamansi juice increased, the wastes that were produced also increased. The peel constitutes the majority of the waste products but contains essential oils that can be used in variety of ways and can be profitable, and it can also replace the plastic microbead in cosmetics and cleaning products that pollutes the marine resources and affect the marine food chain.

It is less than 25 days before Christmas Day and sad to say that Christmas won’t be the same this year. This time, we need to take precautionary measures because of the present situation with the pandemic. This will not only make us safe and secured this holiday season, but also help us avoid the spread of the Coronavirus.
For time immemorial and since the time of Christianization, it has already been a practice for Filipinos to celebrate the holiday season on Christmas Eve, where family members are gathered for Noche Buena and it is ideally cheaper when ingredients are bought from the market and grocery stores and just cook them at home. When going to the supermarket or grocery store, don’t forget to sanitize the handles of shopping trolleys or baskets before shopping. Remember to keep at least 1-metre distance from others and avoid touching your eyes, mouth and nose and of course, with your face mask and face shield on. It is best to list down the things and food you need to buy on a piece of paper so that you will not stay much longer in the market or grocery store, especially when it’s enclosed and fully airconditioned.
