Pineapple is more than just a delicious tropical fruit- it offers significant health benefits as well. The Philippines is the second largest producer and exporter of pineapples in the world after Thailand. That’s why most, if not all, Filipinos already have an idea about this juicy fruit. This popular fruit that originated from South America, is packed with nutrients, antioxidants and other helpful compounds, such as enzymes that can fight inflammation and disease. Thus, pineapples have been linked to many health benefits, including aiding digestion, boosting immunity and speeding up recovery from surgery, among others.

More than 200 participants consisting of Provincial/City/Municipal Nutrition Action Officers (P/C/MNAOs), District/City/Municipal Nutrition Program Coordinators (D/C/MNPCs), Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNSs), DOH Nutritionist-Dietitian Deployment Project (NDDPs), and Nutrition staff attended the Online General Assembly for R9 P/C/MNAOs, D/C/MNPCs, and BNSs conducted by the National Nutrition Council Region IX via Google Meet on 15 January 2021 at 9AM.
Nutrition Program Coordinator Nimfa D. Ekong was happy to mention in her welcome message that a lot of participants were able to join and attend. She also thanked the LGUs for conducting a BNS special meeting in their respective municipalities for them to be able to attend the meeting online while still practicing the proper health protocols. She wished that this year would surpass the accomplishments of the previous year most especially in the improvement of the nutrition situation of the region with the help of the program implementers and partners.

Pregnant mothers should be extra careful on what food they take. Certain experiences during pregnancy might be found very unusual to the woman compared to her pre-pregnancy state. Some of the pregnant mothers would experience morning sickness mostly attributed to hormonal changes and blood sugar level reduction and some to other causes. Some may also experience “Pica”, a condition in which pregnant woman compulsively eat nonfood items (over the course of at least a month) that don't have any nutritional value, like dirt and clay. The medical term comes from the Latin name for magpie (Pica pica), a bird that's said to eat almost anything. And for some, they crave over their usual food but has ill-effects during pregnancy. Thus, it is important to know which foods are safe to eat and which foods to avoid. Some foods contain toxins which could lead to defects in the unborn baby, while others contain food-borne bacteria which could weaken the immune system and causes damage to the fetus. We all know that pregnancy is a journey with many changes.

Cancer is a major public health threat worldwide. It is a killer disease when not detected early. According to World Health Organization, Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally and is responsible for an estimated 9.6 million deaths in 2018. In order to increase public awareness on the dangers of this dreaded disease, Proclamation No. 1348 was enacted by then President Ferdinand Marcos declaring every third week of January as National Cancer Consciousness Week.
The observance of the National Cancer Consciousness Week focuses on the avoidance of exposure to the risk factors of chronic disease such as physical inactivity, improper diet and nutrition, smoking and use of alcohol. Tobacco use is the worst risk factor for cancer and is responsible for approximately 22% of cancer deaths, while cancer causing infections such as hepatitis and human papilloma virus (HPV) are responsible for up to 25% of cancer cases in low- and middle-income countries.

The Department of Agriculture – Zamboanga Peninsula through the Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division (AMAD) spearheads the distribution of the Cash and Food Subsidy for Marginal Farmers and Fishers (CFSMFF) program to some 1,187 beneficiaries in Isabela City (Basilan).
The cash and food aid has a total value of ₱5,000.00; three thousand pesos (₱3000) will be given as cash, while the remaining ₱2,000 is specifically intended for rice (₱1000), chicken (₱600) and eggs (₱400).

Jan. 12, 2020- ZCMC Environmental Infrastructure
To create organic hospital food access for employees and patients, ZCMC takes part in Urban Gardening. This environmental-friendly project will improve the hospital's pollution control services and make the hospital environment truly a place to 'heal'.
The ZCMC-Urban Gardening Project is led by Dr. Afdal Kunting, the Medical Center Chief, with the help of Mr. Muneer Hinay of Kids Who Farm.
The hospital dietary section staff had their training on the Introduction to Urban Container Gardening and Seed Sowing last Dec. 22, 2020.
