NNC 9 F1KRSA newly-developed reporting system called the First 1000 Days Reporting System (F1K RS) was introduced to the Province of Zamboanga del Sur through a roll out training conducted by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) Regional Office IX on December 18-20, 2019 at Hotel Guillermo, Pagadian City. The training aims to capacitate the participants/end users with skills on how to use the electronic reporting system for a timely and quality tracking of Early Childhood Care and Development First 1000 Days (ECCD F1K) program implementation. The training was attended by 32 participants composed of Nutrition Action Officers, Nutrition Coordinators and Barangay Nutrition Scholars. It was facilitated by Mr. Elton N. Pelegrino, NNC IX ECCD F1K Provincial Nutrition Coordinator, Ms. Mecelyn B. Ruiles, Municipal Nutrition Program Coordinator (MNPC) of Aurora, ZDS and Mr. Rey Marth G. Sulatorio, ZDS District II Nutrition Program Coordinator.

NNC 9 NSOA 2019November 13, 2019,  the National Nutrition Council Regional Office 9 in coordination with the Dipolog City Nutrition Office conducted the Year 3 Nutrition School On the Air (NSOA) Graduation Ceremony. NSOA started in Dipolog City in 2017 2 years after the National Nutrition Council released the second volume of NSOA that aims to promote and educate the importance of good nutrition and healthy lifestyle thru the discussion of 10-Kumainments in the radio. It has 12 sessions and aired once a week in the local station of Dipolog City.

NSOA in Dipolog City started with 20 Graduates in year 1 and was doubled  in year 2 with 41 graduates who completed the 12 sessions and  the additional listeners who received certificate of participation for not completing but participated in the 12 sessions. Ms. Charmie A. Yu the City Nutrition Action Officer (CNAO) who also served as the Anchorwoman said that the program reached as far as Dumaguete City in Region VII and Region X in Cagayan de Oro and Bukidnon but unfortunately listeners from the neighboring regions cannot join the graduation ceremony due to the distance,but for the next conduct of NSOA, CNAO Yu together with NNC will explore the possibilities of sending certificates to listeners through mail or emails recognizing their efforts for participating the program.

NNC 9 DOSTThe Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Region IX once again celebrated its annual Regional Science and Technology Week (RSTW) on September 9-11, 2019 at the Madrid Hall of Palacio del Sur, Zamboanga City. With President Rodrigo R. Duterte’s call:“ Let us together put science to work for the benefit of the Filipino nation”, the RSTW’s  theme “Science for the People: Enabling Technologies for Sustainable Development” suites his marching order to the DOST towards leveraging science for faster economic and inclusive development, in which RSTW aims to showcase the different Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) exhibits, fora and other side events which highlight DOST technologies and services for the local community.

One of the highlights of the event was the presence of the DOST Secretary Fortunato “Boy” T. de la Peña as the keynote speaker, wherein he emphasized the significance of the celebration. He stated that the Science and Technology Week this year is the DOST flagship event that gathered the country’s leading scientist, researchers, educators and stakeholders who interacted with investors, entrepreneurs, industry representatives and professionals as they opened partnerships and collaboration.

As part of the over-all LGU mobilization strategy in scaling up nutrition in the remaining years of PPAN implementation, the National Nutrition Council Regional Office IX conducted a five-day local planning workshop on Integrating Nutrition in the Provincial Development and Physical Framework Plan (PDPFP), Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) and Local Development Investment Plan (LDIP) for the province of Zamboanga del Sur. The workshop was held at the Hotel Guillermo, Pagadian City which was attended by 122 participants of 28 LGUs of the ZDS province. The participants were composed of Municipal Nutrition Action Officers, Municipal Health Officers, Municipal Budget Officers, Municipal Planning and Development Coordinators and Officers, DILG IX Municipal Local Government Operations Officers and other members of the Municipal Nutrition Committee.

To begin the workshop, Mr. Roger Saniel, Board member and Sangguniang Panglalawigan Vice Chairman on Health and Social Services addressed the welcome remarks for the activity. Mr. Saniel stated that he and the governor of Zamboanga del Sur province are hopeful that the function/activity will bring fusion to a well thought nutrition action plan that will ultimately benefit the constituents of the province specially the needy and the poor.

NNC 9 Dipolog CNCThe initiative of the Local Government Unit of Dipolog in promoting the well-being of the community through the promotion, provision and the delivery of good nutrition program and projects have gained solid ground in the City when it committed its discipline to address hunger and malnutrition among pre-school children, school children and nutritionally-at-risk pregnant women, as a way of life.

Dipolog is situated in the Northwestern part of the Province of Zamboanga del Norte, Philippines and is a sprawling metropolis covering 13,628 hectares. It is the capital component city of Zamboanga del Norte and is composed of twenty-one barangays with an estimated population of 140,000 in 2018. The city has diverse cultures due to its migrants from Luzon, Visayas and the Mindanao Region, where it is located.      

Dipolog City became the regional epitome in the promotion, provision and enforcement of nutritional well-being programs in Region 9, when it seriously took its stand to commit in reduction if not eradicating hunger and malnutrition of identified children 0-59 years old, schoolchildren and pregnant women, as it adopted various initiatives and integrating into its nutrition program support projects coming from its stakeholders, the religious and civic-oriented organizations from the community, that earned the local government the Green Banner Award and the Regional Outstanding Nutrition Action Officer Award by the National Nutrition Council IX in 2017 and 2018. Previous years also showed Dipolog City as consistent awardee not only of its nutrition program in the regional level but also in other programs at the national level.      

NNC 9 BCAMBreast Cancer Awareness Month is an annual international health campaign to increase awareness of the disease. It is celebrated yearly every month of October to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. Breast cancer is by far the most common cancer in women worldwide. Presently, there is no adequate knowledge on its cause, hence early detection of the disease is the foundation to control breast cancer. When Breast Cancer is detected early, with available adequate diagnosis and treatment, there is a good probability that it can be cured. Thus, the objective of the occasion is to raise awareness to everyone through education of its symptoms and treatment.

The City Government of Zamboanga spearheaded the launching of the Breast Cancer Awareness Month together with the celebration of 2019 Zamboanga Hermosa Festival on October 1, 2019. The launching started with a kick-off parade from the Bureau of Fire to Joaquin F. Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex. The activity was participated by different schools, business affiliates and different private and government institutions from barangay to national levels. Most of the participants wore pink shirts symbolizing the annual “Pink October Walk” for the campaign. A short program followed featuring different performances and a message from Florence Alcazar, the president of the Mindanao Breast Cancer Support and Empowerment Association.
