The National Nutrition Council together with the Regional Nutrition &anti-Hunger Committee, Zamboanga Peninsula held the Regional Dissemination of the Philippine Plan of Action for Nutrition (PPAN) 2017-2022 on 05 December 2017 at the Palacio Del Sur Hotel and Convention Center, Zamboanga City. The PPAN is the Country’s framework for nutrition action. It serves as a guide for national governments, local government units, non-government organization, development partners and other stakeholders who wants to be involved in nutrition actions to address malnutrition particularly stunting and wasting, micronutrient deficiency and obesity.
The forum gathered 137 participants from all over the region. In attendance were some Local Chief Executives, Nutrition Action Officers, District/City Nutrition Program Coordinator, Barangay Nutrition scholars, Media partners, NGOs and RNAHC Members. The Chairperson of the Regional Development Council IX (RDC) Mayor Annamel Olegario delivered the keynote message stating her strong support for the PPAN. The Chairperson who is also the mayor of Ipil, Zamboanga Sibugay underscored the importance of good nutrition to development as she committed to support the PPAN in her municipality and be a nutrition champion among the other LCEs in the RDC.
The battle cry “Sa PPAN: Panalo ang Bayan!” sought to motivate the participants to be involved in transforming the PPAN 2017-2022 into local actions to fight malnutrition. Thus, the activity focused on deepening the understanding and appreciation of local officials and critical nutrition partners on the effect of malnutrition particularly on stunting and wasting in children as well as treat it as a development problem.

ANGELIE B. MAMENTOD
Barangay Milagrosa, Alicia, Zamboanga Sibugay
Barangay Nutrition Scholar (BNS), Angelie B. Mamentod or fondly called “Angel” is an indigenous resident of Barangay Milagrosa in Alicia, Zamboanga Sibuagy. Angelie is 29- years old married and has a daughter aged 5 years old. She has a natural passion for community service and her persistent tagging along with the Barangay Health Workers during home visits had caught the notice of the Punong Barangay who appointed her as the Barangay Nutrition Scholar in 2014 upon observing her interest to serve in the community.

National Nutrition Promotion Program for Behavior Change
The Nutrition School On the Air (NSOA) a nutrition promotion module developed by the National Nutrition Council to create public awareness and adopt good nutrition practices will simultaneously be on air in three radio stations in Zamboanga Peninsula.
The Nutrition School On Air is a nutrition specific program that promotes behavior change through radio, ensuring that correct and proper information on nutrition is disseminated to all. The module covers the talking points of the Nutritional Guidelines for Filipinos or the more popular 10 Kumainments.

The Regional Nutrition and Anti-Hunger Committee (expanded RNC Region 9) culminates the observance of the 43rd Nutrition Month Celebration with a Regional Nutrition Quiz Bee among Grade 6 Students of the eight Schools’ Division in the region. The activity coordinated by the National Nutrition Council Region 9, highlights the month-long campaign on healthy diet for good nutrition and healthy life. This year’s Nutrition Month Theme “Healthy diet, gawing habit – FOR LIFE!” aims to increase awareness of the public and practice good nutrition and healthy lifestyle.
The Regional Nutrition Quiz Bee opened to all Elementary Schools Divisions in Region 9. A joint activity of the RNAHC, the Department of Health Regional Office 9 provided for the venue and accommodation, it served as the culminating activity of the committee and was held on 27 July 2017 at the Grand Astoria Hotel, Zamboanga City.

Over the years, the Nutrition Month Celebration (NMC) has been institutionalized by schools and local government units as well as other stakeholders.
This year is the 43rd observance of the celebration and the focus is on the promotion of healthy diets with the theme “Healthy diet, gawing habit -FOR LIFE!”

The National Nutrition Council in its commitment to build capacities of local government units to address and prevent undernutrition and food insecurity is now on its 4th batch expansion of the Nutrition Early Warning System on Food and Nutrition Security Program. Among the municipalities where the program will be established this year is Jose Dalman in Zamboanga del Norte. Being one of the top ten municipalities in the region with high prevalence of malnutrition based on the 2016 OPT, the municipality is also an ideal candidate for the establishment of the NEW-FNS because of its topography having both coastal and mountainous interior barangays and in several occasions been subjected to flash floods and landslides.
